Saweeeetttt, a 426 Hemi, should have been the Hemi die timer....Didn't they have a standard RB engine block, with “hemi” heads and didn't they eventually graduate to top dog racing capacity for a while?? I knew a couple of friends and they were always messen with theirs just so they could race each other later...Bad little tear em up sure piece of machinery...

I was in Cordova, IL in '65 when the Seely-Steven's B Rail was the first B to top 170. It was powered by one of them critters. Melt the wax out of you're ears when it went by and the fumes would make your eyes tear.

Little Red Wagon. Hemi Under Glass. Color Me Gone. Art Arfonse & The Green Monster.

Sigh....... Good ol days.

Goat's were great. I have a cousin who is gone now but he was a master mechanic for Chrysler in the 50s---early 80s. He had Baracuda 6 pak that ran like an ape, but it wasn't enough so he built his own hemicuda. Wow. Then he got his hands on a cop 505 interceptor.

That car was so fast, it was sudden. He blueprinted it and dropped it into a '59 drop top Plymouth Fury with tuned high speed suspension.. His mother in CA had a heart attack and he drove it from IL to Sacramento in 17 hours 10 minutes. No joke. He averaged something like 112 mph. Gumball rally speed. He actually out ran a cop helicopter somewhere and.lost it before they could set up a road block. Smokey and his TA had nothing on him.

That car was illegal fast, shut off. He had it for years. Black and red interior and exterior. Rolled and pleated leather. Caps with 3 bar spinners. I had a Studebaker station wagon. He used to tell me it was ok. Soon my Stude would grow up and we would all find out what is was going to become .

Loved them old Studebakers, the 53 was great. Gorgeous lines, perfect hot rod. I also love the old Stude pickups. Friend had one with a 318 Plymouth in it. It wasn't fast but, the way it was geared it was a bar hoppin, stop light to stop light badass machine. Haven't had more so much fun since the hogs ate my little brother. (Just kiddin, don't want a bunch of liberals believing the hogs actually ate my brother.)

My first was a '63 Wagon. In '71 I lucked onto a '57 Golden Hawk with supercharger. I still have it and will not part with it. It is still cherry. For a short time I had an Avanti R4 but got rid of it after nearly k*****g myself in it. It would flat our fly but the suspension was so poor, you had to keep it straight ahead. Cornering even gently was suicide at over 130. At 130 it was just waking up. Kinda small inside also. Like a casket.

One thing for sure, the Hawk and Avanti were unique, and I thought beautiful cars. Glad to know you still have the Hawk. Was the Gran Turismo (sp) Hawk before or after the Golden Hawk? How did the two compair in performance? Enjoy your Sunday my friend.

Don't know much about the GTH. I never drove one so I don't know how it handled. I think the stock engine was a 289 V8 and not super charged so I doubt it would keep up with my 57 GH. Although I remember Granatelli as head of production back then so he may have offered the R4 has an option in which case that car would be a whole 'nother animal. Remember when Granatelli got involved at the Indianapolis 500 with that turbine powered four wheel drive thing they called the vacuum cleaner? It nearly a lapped the entire field and broke down I think a couple laps before the end of the race due to a $4 part. I remember watching that race on Wide World of Sports and how that car passed everybody right off the start by driving off the racetrack on to the apron that circles the infield and was in the lead going into the first turn. That was back when Granatelli was head of STP..
