I want to relate a story of an incident that happened when I was in school--college--in 1984. I don't want humans to feel abandoned, just yet.
There was a student, the former supervisor of the Mineralogy Department at Martin Marietta (retired), taking a pottery course. His son, he told me, had seemed to get into a lot of trouble during his adolescent years. But when he called my friend, Dick, from a Mexican jail, having been incarcerated for drugs---marijuana, specifically, Dick said he, Dick, simply hit the roof. He said his hand was shaking violently. He was VERY angry. After that, when his son was out of jail, things between them changed. The kid was no longer pampered and spoiled. Dick wanted him to be an engineer, but he became an insurance adjuster, and quite the responsible citizen.
DON'T GIVE UP!

I will bet he said to his son "I taught you right from wrong, I gave you everything you wanted but not what you needed, responsibility and honor. I love you, but you own your mistakes, and they are yours to pay for. COPE WITH IT. " He should have said that when the boy was ten.it would have been best for all concerned.

You have a good understanding of parenting, NPP.
But it's never too late to learn, with proper discipline.

For some, there are lessons which can only be learned the hard way.

This really is a parable, as regards the entirety of mankind.
