I will be father of the g***m here. Isn't my responsibility here to pay for the rehearsal dinner? What I thought anyway.
I was recently informed that there will be no rehearsal, and I will be splitting the cost of providing food, and beverages to the entire guest list with his mother. It's shaping up to be about 300 people now.
The 'Mother of the g***m' played the 'Father of the g***m' card on me, and it didn't go well at all. The only fiscal responsibility she claims is buying her dress for the event.

Then there is the shower......I was informed Sunday that I'm required to be there, and provide a bigger better gift because I am 'father of the g***m'. Since when do men go to showers?

I have been told that I need to buy new clothes that will never be worn again, shave, or trim my beard, and that I haven't contributed anything to their 'honey moon account. I have been putting back money for the whole package, but I guess it'll all have to go for feeding, and boozing 300 people.

Um, do you know these people? They sound like strangers. If it makes you feel better, be glad we're not still doing the really old traditions where Fathers had to buy their sons brides. Now, in some traditions, such as England years ago, Fathers of the bride had to bribe Fathers of the g***m to take their daughters with a dowry.

I guess the new tradition, is for the Parents of the happy couple - to do as they're told and pony up. I'm just curious what the tradition is now for the bridal couple, well, besides the um, ah, you know. Oh, BTW, bridal showers are for brides and all the women folk - the dudes just pay for everything. In my day, dudes were forbidden to be anywhere near the shower location, which is why they usually had the stag party during that time. That begs the question; who is paying for the bachelor party? Are you footing the bill for that too?

So, have your own bachelor party. Apparently, the new adage is " he who has the gold - is at the mercy of everyone else ".

Hey, you could move to France with me. Sex is free there now, according to the news. 8-)

A couple of things here for you, Archie..As you will see you are under no "obligation" to do anything other the suggestions made here~~

http://weddings.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Wedding_Etiquette_for_Parents_of_the_G***m

Financial etiquette is often sensitive for everyone involved in the wedding. Parents of the g***m need to discuss between themselves what help they are able, or want, to offer, before talking with the bride and g***m. While the couple should not expect anyone other than themselves to pay for the wedding, it is a kind gesture to offer financial help if you are able. Treat any financial help for the wedding like the gift that it is - not as a way to control wedding-related decisions.

couple on steps of money
Traditional Who Pays for What
The parents of the g***m follow rehearsal dinner etiquette by planning and paying for it, along with their own attire, t***sportation and lodging, and a wedding gift. Sometimes this list includes the bride's bouquet and the bar at the reception. In some circles, the g***m's parents also help him pay for some of his expenses.....

Another opinion, since anything goes in a wedding~~~

Congratulations to your son and his soon to be wife.....   And a prayer to you and Mrs. B that you survive it all~~ ;)

The 'best man' and other friends normally host the bachelor party. Each attendee is expected to buy one round of drinks for all.
