Man Harassed and Fined For Planting Vegetables in His Own Yard

Remember, in the US, you never truly own anything.

The Daily Sheeple

April 2, 2016

A family in Sugar Creek, Missouri grew the beautiful vegetable garden in the photo above.

They’ve been given four days to tear out the entire garden or face a fine.

Why? Because it is in their front yard, and city officials and a few neighbors don’t like it.

Nathan Athans said he planted the garden in his front yard because it gets optimal sunlight. His backyard only gets sunshine for about two hours per day, and only in certain areas. (Maybe he should just tell "them" to 'KISS HIS GRITS'!)...

Athans told KSHB that he grows several different types of vegetables on his lawn and loves tending to his garden.

I’d probably say about 300 hours [so far this year], I spend all my free time out here.

I want my family to know where their food is coming from, I don’t want to have to go to the grocery store and worry about what was done to that food.

Last summer, the city cited Athans for weeds in his garden, and he complied with the order to clean things up, and paid the fine.

But now, the city has passed a shiny new ordinance – one that Athans believes is part of a witch hunt against him. (Control, Control, Control The Democrat's Montra!)

The family started an online petition, which explains why they feel targeted:

The city of Sugar Creek, Missouri passed an ordinance two days ago on March 28th, forbidding front yard gardens to grow food, within the first 30 feet of front yard space from the street. Mayor Matt Mallinson both passed and approved this ordinance. They gave us until April 1st to comply. We are the only house in the city with a front yard garden, and just happen to be exactly within those first 30 feet. They have been targeting us since we moved in last year, because we grew a garden in the front yard.

The city’s building official, Paul Loving, told KSHB that city received many complaints and that the ordinance is their solution.

The petition goes on to explain the reasons the garden is so important to Athans and his family:

We believe in sustainability, growing our food locally without pesticides and excessive fertilizer use, reducing our need for f****l f**ls to import produce from other countries, countries that have little or no regulations on pesticide use. Sugar Creek is also prone to flooding, as it is located next to the Missouri River, so using our yard for growing plants instead of grass is beneficial because our garden takes in water as well as holding the soil together to prevent erosion, all while filtering out pollutants. It has helped our basement not flood during storms, prevented storm water runoff pollution, reduced f****l f**l use, helped us eat healthier, and prevented us from consuming pesticides and GMOs.

Unfortunately, Athans isn’t the first to be subjected to harassment over growing his own food. People have been charged with crimes, threatened with jail time, and had their property destroyed for growing gardens in their own yards.

Remember, in the US, you never truly own anything. [Taxes, fees, and fines are "rent". If you don't pay the rent, they kick you out. Doesn't sound like "ownership" to me. Sounds like neo-feudalism, where everyone but the ruling class are renters. - RB]

“These citations were received this winter. I received a warning just before the infamous blizzard that hit the midwest leaving feet of snow. As the snow finally started to melt, the actual citation and court date was received. I then continued it while thinking long and hard about the time allocation of law enforcement and the moral objections I had to funding them. Personal experiences made it abundantly clear that those hurting people, creating victims and violating protection orders were receiving breaks and lowered charges, suspected to be due to the the victim’s political affiliations, while our ‘protectors’ were combing through people’s property looking for easy revenue.

We had quite a bit of e*****e w*****r here in Missouri, including snow accumulation in May! It was a hard time establishing gardens for many of us in the midwest and a lot of us had to restart our gardens numerous times. We lost a lot of plants and while my kid were disappointed, I will always remember how much fun we had planning our garden and decorating our tires.

Admittedly, the flower beds created out of cinder blocks and other items I was able to reuse are far more impressive than my matching purple and sage tires. I want to make it clear that I did not have a pile of ugly tires stacked up for all to see. I want to make it even clearer, that even I had, it does not make it any less absurd to be facing a forced admission of guilt, extortion or jail time for doing so. I encourage anyone with a mindset that has the audacity to suggest someone should be caged or threatened due to something in their own yard, aesthetically pleasing or not, to take some time for some serious self reflection. I understand how easy it is to become callous and judgmental in a society conditioned to be such. I was once one of those people, even. I’ve since got over myself and my defense mechanisms.

Bullying, caging and stealing from peaceful people is wrong. You should have the ‘right’ to live and pursue your own happiness as long as you are not initiating force against peaceful people or their property. ”

I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

Yeah, I've made this claim here before, about us not really owning anything, just renting it. The city where I live, refused to clean out the ditch in front of my house. The ditch is their property and it's condition flooded my yard every time it rained and I thought my taxes covered such maintenance. After 3 years of fighting with them I gave up and cleared the ditch myself - then they tried to fine me for modifying city property.

As I've mentioned before, try not paying your property tax rent - and see how long you keep your house and property. I've watched a number of "sheriffs sales" around here and noticed that no matter how much the auctions generated, the "administrative fees" always equaled wh**ever was left after the overdue taxes were paid - so the original owners never got a dime.

I grew up with a huge garden - we grew everything (parents were raised on farms) and I firmly believe people should be able to grow a garden anywhere on their property.
