Self Reflection...

You grow up a lot, the day you have your first real laugh ...... at yourself. ----- Ethel Barrymore

(Can You Hear Them, Who Is Ethel Barrymore??? Don D.)

Infants chuckle and gurgle and find the world amusing, but apparently they rarely laugh at themselves. Perhaps that's because they're still very much the lord and master of their world. Even when they see themselves in the mirror, tots are more likely to find themselves incredible than hilarious.

As we grow wiser, we gain a sense of proportion & balance about ourselves and our position in the universe. Just as the earth is not the center of the solar system, so are we but only one of billions of people on our planet.

Can we grin at ourselves? Or are we always guarding our stature & our dignity ?? Or maybe we feel fragile, vulnerable, & defensive ?? A sense of humor means the ability to enjoy all human foibles, ....... even our own. Having this kind of humor helps us to put others - and especially ourselves in relation to others - in perspective. It tends to put us at-ease with life. Perhaps it is only when we've had a good laugh at ourselves & our own imperfections, that we really begin to gain in stature. By keeping our importance in perspective, we learn humility, which in turn, makes room for new growth.

I can enjoy a good laugh with others. I allow myself the freedom of a sense of humor, especially about myself.

We should humble ourselves like little ones. Enjoy and thank GOD for HIS Blessings instead of being like 'spoiled brats' grumbling, complaining and being self-centered. I try to follow the Holy Bible scriptures because I realize The FATHER of fathers guides me for my own good.

Thanks Don, it was a good post.

Why should I laugh at myself when everyone else does it for me.

Where I used to work there was a rather unpleasant woman. I was talking about her to a friend, and in her defense commented that she had said I was the best rounded person she knew. He replied (look at my screen name) "I think it was a strictly physical comment". I really laughed at that.
