Is chocolate toxic to dogs?

I came across this quick way to find out if the amount of chocolate your dog consumed when he stole your candy bar will be dangerous to him, other than discipline earned for stealing your candy.

This is from PET MED

Enough to really scare you that toxicity "bar". However, and perhaps it was plain luck, but Dakota, our last shepherd managed to reach into the pantry, retrieve, and eat a box of Godiva chocolates while I was at work (a whole pound's worth) and did not have the grace to be at all ill. Grateful he wasn't, but it was a Mother's Day present!! :hunf:

What kind of chocolate was it? Milk chocolate? Dark chocolate? Cocoa powder seems to be the worst. It only takes 5 ounces to get a two hundred pound dog really sick. White chocolate doesn't seem to do anything.

Actually chocolate is a stimulant to many dogs and can be used for bringing out of anesthetic a dog that isn't waking up well enough, under a vets supervision of course. A friend of ours had a twenty pound Scottie that ate a large milk chocolate Easter bunny and didn't have any problems, except that the sofa needed cleaning as the dog smeared it all over everything while eating the thing.

I've been led to believe white chocolate really isn't chocolate, but it comes from cocoa butter...fat(?) That would make sense. Dogs are like toddlers, everything into the mouth, good, bad, indifferent. After the chocolate incident, milk chocolate it was, we put bungy cords on all cabinet doors. It was hours after Dakota consumed the chocolate that I discovered the box of Godivas was ALL gone! It is my understanding there is a very small window between the time a dog consumes chocolate and things start to go south. Dakota, I do believe, had a cast iron stomach. He filched an artisan loaf of hot pepper bread, ate most of it before I snatched the remaining crumbs up. Never even a burp of contentment did we hear. Strange dog he was, and irreplaceable too. I miss him still.
