The desk top computer I had for 11 years finally bit the dust, after a battle with Microsoft over windows 10. I tried the "10" on my laptop and couldn't do a thing with it. I didn't want "Cortana" to tell me what to look for, how to look for it, or tell me what I should be looking at. I can think for myself and just needed a machine to do what I told it to do. "Cortana" routinely ignored my commands and did what SHE wanted me to do ( this isn't a sexist rant, it could have been called "Bob" for all I cared ) - so I changed back to windows 7.

My desk top was toast. Something got on there over night and scrambled my hard drive and confused the processor. Norton found no v***s or other malicious stuff, neither did windows defender. It just stopped working - after a "critical" windows update. Coincidence? Maybe. The hardware manager tested everything and gave a green light, windows couldn't find any problems - yet - the machine didn't work. It became totally stupid, couldn't stay on the net, couldn't find files and just froze for no particular reason - so I gave up and replaced it.

Now, I have a new machine that I have to train all over again. The old one ( when it was working of course ) knew what I wanted to do the same instant I did and helped me do it. One click and I was on my way to doing what I needed to do. The fact that I'm here on my new machine, is a result of hours of training between me and the new machine. Even now, I'm not sure who trained who, but at least the machine didn't QUESTION me about my choices, or demand that I make different choices or treat me like a moron, because I wasn't interested in what was "trending" right that minute.

Newer electronics treat us the way politicians do, in that they want to make our choices FOR us - because we're just too stupid to be allowed to make them ourselves. The day my machines stop being MY tools and I become THIERS - is the day I get two good sticks ( to rub together to make fire, etc. ) and go off the grid. BTW, Netflix is off my list now too, when it began the "suggestions for you" and stopped letting me see what I WANTED to see.

I refuse to be a s***e to a machine, Microsoft, Apple, HP, Government or any other robot. My wife will be the ONLY entity that tells me what to do, when to do it, how to do it and where to do it. I'm afraid I MUST draw the line right there ( not a red line, those aren't worth anything anymore ).

You do not need a new machine, just a different operating system.
I too tired of Windows 10 and searched for an alternative.
I recently installed Linux Mint and it does everything that Windows does only better. It cost me all of $3.49 including postage and included office programs that are compatible with word and all of those expensive office programs that you have to pay extra for with Windows. Took all of 15 minutes to install and instantly recognized all of my paripherals and installed the drivers for those right away. This has got to be the best kept secret of the computer world. The only Windows in my house now are the ones I look through .

Love it, too bad so many people are willing to let the political elites tell them what to think and believe.

I will rock win7 till they pull the plug on it like they did XP. Win10 spies on you. There's a way to shut some of that crap off, but I don't remember where I saw it. My wife's laptop automatically downloaded win10. I keep getting a window pop up to download it, but I refuse.

Right on Pop,
I'm like you changed over to Linux Mint. So nice not to be bothered with suggestions all the time. Do your own thing be happy & enjoy your new operating sys.
