You may have heard this, or something similar. It doesn't make any sense why someone would ever be in this position. It's merely hypothetical.
Say there are a bunch of people who are facing certain doom. If you don't act, they will all die. These people are all adults.
There is also a single child who faces the same fate.
You have to make a choice. Save the single child, or save a much greater number of adults. What do you do?

Why? You're allowing a lot of people to die for the sake of one child. Is a child's life more valuable than the life of an adult? How about a hundred adults? Or a thousand? Is there a number high enough to make you change your mind?

You can say what you might do now, when there is no actual threat.
But you cannot predict the unforseen.
