5th Chapter
Verse 1 and 2

From the 5th to the 7th chapter are the Beatitudes or the Sermon on the Mount. It is strange how some people think they can preach better than Jesus. Maybe that is why Jesus’ words are never taught. We’ll cover them all.

Verse 3 through 10

These blessings are to people in general. They apply to anyone who does them. We should pay attention to the fact that the blessings don’t apply to the loudest or the boldest, but to the ones that are kind when others aren’t kind to them. For me the civil rights movement comes to mind as that is what I am researching. I believe the reason for Dr. King’s success is his non-violent stand. Nonviolence was following the teachings of Jesus. Malcolm X was not nearly as effective. Satan hates everything about God and is criminally insane. Whenever anyone suggests that civil rights could have been done through violence, be sure that satan is pushing their buttons.

Verse 11

These blessings are personal. People don’t want to endure these situations as it is natural to want to be liked and no one wants to be lied on for any reason. But be prepared, when you decide to follow Jesus those deceived by satan are going to have to make up a character flaw because their logic is weak. Character assassination is all that satan has left.

Verse 12

This is what Christ says we should do. I will admit I don’t enjoy people saying things about me that aren’t true. I may have 20 years left so I will keep my nose to the grindstone and do what I can.

Verse 13
Salt is a preservative and a precious commodity. When God looks at this planet He sees His children being kind in the face of mistreatment, He sees them as a precious asset. If God is for it then satan is against it and the appeal in your mind is to lash out. I’m no different. I’m not a piece of wood. In most situations I try to make decisions that please God and make the devil mad. If your seasonings lose their flavor they are useless. There is nothing you can do to add flavor to something that is supposed to be the flavor additive. If there is no difference between the people you meet in church and those you meet at work or in bars, find a church where there is a difference.

Verse 14

Walking in darkness is something we should be familiar with. Most of us go to the bathroom at night. When we do we may step or trip over something we didn’t know was there; if we haven’t turned on the light. If we turn the light on we can easily walk thru the room. The disciples easily understood what Jesus was teaching as Jerusalem was a city on a hill and the walls could be seen for miles. When the world wants to disembowel infants in the womb, a Christian knows if sex didn’t occur pregnancy wouldn’t happen. The female is alive now. The man she is having sex with is here. Until they copulate the child doesn’t exist.

Verse 15 and 16

Light is intelligence. Never hide your intelligence. God gives wisdom. Ecclesiastes 2:26 When you can get wisdom from the scriptures the glory should be the Heavenly Father’s.

Verse 17

Even though some of the teachings seem extreme, all line up with the Old Testament.

Verse 18

This is what it would take for the word of God to be of no effect. If you think about it, the civil rights movement and the teachings of Jesus line up. The non-violent stance, the willingness to obey the law while not retaliating to violent state troopers was very effective. A 10% minority was able to get a 90% majority to treat them with respect. Today I get more racial insults from my own kind.
Verse 19

Old Testament law states that in the mouth of two witnesses shall truth be established. The more you find the same topic addressed in scripture the stronger God feels about it. In 3 gospels Jesus commands to take up your cross. In two He says if you don’t, you are not worthy. I would rather stand in front of Christ with six crosses on my back and risk hearing Him say, “not those, just that one”. Than to stand in front of Him in a nice suit and be asked, “Where is your cross?” Pull out a gold chain around my neck and be asked, “How are they going to nail you to that?” This scripture is only mentioned 1 time but let me say something. The least in Heaven is still in Heaven. If you do the best you can to stand for God’s word, right or wrong you are in.

Verse 20

The scribes and Pharisees are covered in the 23rd chapter. These were wicked people. There will not be wicked people in Heaven. I don’t care how many people disagree. Those that do wrong should stop it. The choices you make and the actions you take make a difference.

Verse 21

“Don’t murder anyone” is one of the Ten Commandments. By the time of Christ arrival the commandments had been degraded from words from the mouth of God to oral tradition passed down from generation to generation. Instead of doing it because God said so, it had become tradition.

Verse 22

When everyone gets angry because some leader has a fault, what has the person done to you? We are all sinners and everyone goes through the same things. We shouldn’t be judgmental. This will be covered when I get to the 7th chapter.
Verse 23

Aught means anything. We shouldn’t be in church singing songs and go home and argue with our spouses.

Verse 24

Make peace with your family before you put on a show in church.

Verse 25 and 26

Just because you agree with someone doesn’t mean your heart is with them. Appearances don’t matter. This is why satan will fail. Shortsighted thinking will lead to failure. The events that happen right now won’t matter in 10 years. You will never have good credit with short sighted thinking. Spending money as soon as it gets in your hand is short sighted thinking.

Verse 27 and 28

This is another one of the ten commandments that got degraded to oral tradition. I need to bring out a point because this scripture is misapplied. If both people are single and they actually have sex it is fornication. Fornication is not adultery. Anyway Jesus didn’t come to condemn, He came to save. But what is the scripture saying? If you are married you should not entertain the thought of cheating. If you find yourself attracted to someone other than your spouse, stay away from that person. Relationships should be about more than sex. Most of us only have sex for about an hour. There are 24 hours in a day. A married person has no business putting moves on a single person.

Verse 29 and 30

We need to bring out another point, the body parts themselves are not the source or sin. People don’t steal because they can’t control their hands. It would be stupid to put out an eye so that you wouldn’t look at a member of the opposite sex. If both of you are single, a relationship forms from the initial attraction. Before someone becomes your wife or husband, they must be a fiancé. Before they become a fiancé, they must be boyfriend or girlfriend. I got off track. What is the scripture talking about? The many membered body of Christ is what it is talking about. There are many functions from gifts of the spirit. Singing is not one of them, neither is being an usher. If someone is not performing their function, it is better to replace one person than let them pull down the whole church.

Verse 31 and 32

The marriage contract is binding and should mean something. God hates divorce. Mal 2:16 If you make a vow to God you have to keep it; according to Num 30:1, and 2 Deuteronomy 23:21 – 23. and Ecclesiastes 5:4-6. God looks at time differently. God doesn’t die. We rarely make it past 100, and those that do don’t look too healthy compared to someone in their 20’s. A day with God is like a thousand years to man. Doing the math 10 years to man is less than 15 minutes to God. It is like vowing to spend the rest of your life with a person and 15 minutes later changing your mind. Jesus says in Mathew 19:6, “What God has joined together let not man put asunder”. You made the vow, you should keep it.

Verse 33 through 37
I didn’t find this in Old Testament law. Some of tradition is not in the word of God. We consider drinking, smoking, cussing, and gambling to be sins. In the Old Testament nobody smoked. If God considered drinking a sin why was the first miracle Christ performed turning water to wine? We are condemning normal relationships and legalizing gay marriage? If you don’t see the desire of satan being accomplished before your eyes, you are not paying attention. You don’t need anyone to trust you if you have integrity. If they don’t and you tell the truth it will blow up in their face. If you have a job and pay your bills, any creditor that turns you down won’t make any money off of you. Life is not a zero sum game. We are in the world not of the world. Our success shouldn’t come at someone else’s expense.
Verse 38

This is in the Old Testament but everyone had stopped reading for themselves and it had become oral tradition. We should treat others the way we want to be treated ourselves. If we don’t want our spouse cheating on us then we shouldn’t cheat on them.

Verse 39 through 42

The Sanhedrin had turned Old Testament law on its head. God originally gave us the law for our own good. The law had been turned into something that was tit for tat. This is short sighted thinking. Nothing we have been through will matter to anyone else when we are dead. What happens when a person slaps another person and what message are they trying to send? They are trying to show everybody else that they are in charge. In charge of what? Does the slap really matter? Next year will it be remembered? Our thinking is too myopic. This bubble-gum Christianity that we are teaching is not biblically founded. In the end we win. Even though satan has had the upper hand for thousands of years.

Verse 43 through 48

You will not be betrayed by someone who openly declares that they don’t like you. Some people see it necessary to get behind you so they can stab you in the back. You should give people something to miss. So that if they betray they realize they were getting more than they were giving. (maybe but if God sees you patiently suffering for Him, He is merciful and sooner or later He will change the situation).

Matthew 5:8. "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God". In the NT, people possessed with demonic spirits saw Jesus as God. Would you call these evil people "pure in heart"? Righteous people in the last days when God comes to earth will believe in him. They will be called "the sons of light". Christians will be called "the sons of darkness".
