Psalm 22

Forward

This is the Psalm that Jesus taught as He was dying on the cross. It was written 1,000 years before He was born. The word of God is supernatural. If you have trouble sleeping at night, read your bible or put it on your chest as you sleep. At times the bible can be a lifeline to sanity.

Verse 1

Jesus quoted this verse in Hebrew as He was dying on the cross. Because He spoke in Hebrew no one that heard understood but His disciples. Most of those around Him thought He was trying to call an old testament prophet to rescue Him from the cross. Jesus is talking to us. God is in control. Only God can predict what will happen 1,000 years before it happens. You can tell whether the prophet was sent by God or not by his accuracy. If what he says will happen doesn’t happen, God didn’t send him. This Psalm describes the soldiers gambling for Christ’s clothes at the foot of the cross. The Roman soldiers did not even know Christ. There is no way He could arranged this.

Verse 2

As a disciple of Christ you will find yourself on the storm tossed seas of life. The winds will blow and the seas will billow. The boat will toss and turn and it will seem like Christ is asleep. After you cry for rescue Christ will calm the stormy sea, but you should ask yourself where is your faith? If God doesn’t test your faith, how will He know if it’s any good?

Verse 3

God wants praise from those who serve Him. He is disgusted by the prayers of those that refuse to live Godly. Even a prayer of repentance if you don’t change your behavior. Sin and repentance only work if you stop sinning. We will always do something but the sins we commit in our 20’s should not trouble us in our 50’s. I may have difficulty not hitting back but I don’t cheat on my wife.

Verse 4

We no longer worship the God of our fathers. The church used to make sure God’s will was done on earth. Now we worship a God we don’t understand. We put ourselves in impossible situations and expect God to get us out. God does not save from tribulation, He saves through tribulation.

Verse 5

God was on the side of the African Americans during the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King changed the conscience of this nation. He was a Baptist minister who never even ran for public office. Yet before the civil rights movement this nation had Jim Crow laws that enabled one man to abuse another man if he was of the African American race. This nation no longer recognizes Jim Crow laws. If someone pays their fare, they can sit in any open seat.

Verse 6

If you practice the principles contained in the bible, there will be some people that will think they can take advantage of you. But fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. They best way to deal with these kind of people is to let God fight your battles. Vengeance may not be immediate, but when it comes it will be devastating. It will be fun to watch God handle it. There will be times that people will despise you for being successful from making good decisions. They will envy the success you have from following God , while at the same time refusing to follow God themselves. If you live a life not practicing discipline you will be a failure. The root of the word disciple is discipline.

Verse 7 & 8

1,000 years before Christ was born, the words out of the mouths of the chief priests, scribes, and elders who were present at Christ’s crucifixion are written here. They were saying what God said they would say, even though they were speaking when they thought they had the upper hand. God is in control.

Verse 9 & 10

Train up a child on the way they should go; and when they become old they will not depart from it.

Verse 11

Read Matthew 8:23 - 27 and Luke 8:22 - 25. The experiences of Christ and the disciples should be similar to yours. All that will live Godly in Christ shall endure persecution. We really don’t understand God, Jesus, or satan. We will be judged and our lives depend on the actions we choose to pursue.

Verse 12 & 13

Satan and his children were mocking Christ when He died. But the death of Christ was not the end, it was the beginning. After Christ rose from the dead, I can guarantee no one was laughing.

Verse 14

The emotions that Jesus felt as He hung on the cross are shared by His disciples, or at least should be. America will not be saved until God’s will is done on earth as it is in Heaven. At one time we sung must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free? No there’s a cross for everyone, and there’s a cross for me. Now a feel good do nothing Christianity is taught where everyone is accepted whether you live by the bible or not. Those that think they are saved are useless. They have been taught by the unlearned. Jesus said in three gospels to take up their cross and follow Him, in Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, and Luke 9:24. Today we are taught that a relationship with Christ is possible while we ignore every sermon He preached, parable He taught, and miracle He performed.

Verse 15

At times your situation will appear hopeless. You should keep going. If you can’t do what you want, just do what you can. Try the best you can to be as good as you can. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Life is not a sprint but a marathon.

Verse 16

Jesus was crucified by the Romans on a “t“ shaped cross. Rome ruled Judea. To show their authority, there would be crucifixions for miles leading in to Judea. A Roman soldier could approach Judean and have him carry his armor for a mile. Because Rome ruled Judea, they took money out of the pockets of every citizen. The people of Judea did not like being ruled by Rome. In spite of this, the religious leaders incited the crowd to have the Romans kill Christ.

Verse 17

As Jesus hung on the cross, His muscles gave out and He reached the point of exhaustion. At times frustration and exasperation will come up as people look for something in your past looking for reason to discredit you. Whatever reason a person has for not listening to God should be between them and God.

Verse 18

While Jesus had a part in the triumphal entry, this was accomplished by God. God predicted this would occur 1,000 years before it did. God is in control. We should do the best we can to be as good as we can.

Verse 19 - 21

Jesus taught, healed, cast out devils, and provided. For this organized religion had Him executed. God raised Jesus from the dead. The teachings of the church should be help it’s congregation. The only beneficiaries are the false prophets.

Verses 22 & 23

When you recognize God and understand his word, you should tell others. When you light a candle you don’t put it under a table.

Verse 24

If satan has deceived the whole world, and God’s word has taken root in your life; then some people will have two problems with you, everything you say and do. Be patient and wait on the Lord.

Psalm 22 is not about a crucifixion. It is about something that would happen in the Messiah's childhood. Verse 30: "A seed shall serve him, it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation". In the bible, a generation is forty years. The Messiah would be tortured to death but would survive this and not die in the end. Job 16 and Psalms 22 and 69 describe an act of medical neglect, sexual assault, and torture. This prophecy already happened, and it happened on 10/22/69. The two Psalms it fulfilled correspond to the day and year it happened.
