I rarely agree with you JMHO, but I do on this one.

Eliminating "dominant" holidays is not the way to be more inclusive, adding the celebration of culturally diverse holidays would be. As much as I h**e the commercialization of Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentines Day, my guess is these elementary school students are just going to be confused and feel c***ted when they don't get to celebrate them in school. Why not add an event from Judaism, Buddhism and Islam if inclusion is the goal?

You inclusive idea has merit. Valentines day can be problematic these days, some people do not take rejection well. Columbus has been revealed as a genocidal maniac, the pilgrims were not much better. Christmas is actually a pagan holiday since no one knows the actual birthday of jesus. We are increasingly a more diverse nation that needs to recognize our differences.

I am still trying to figure out if the uniform that he has on is from Soviet Socialist Russia pr C*******t China or maybe even North Korea. It surely can't be from America the land of the free and home of the brave as he sounds like a liberal progressive hell bent on destroying America and not preserving it.

Indeed, it does have merit. However, guess I have to ask what would you do for children of families whose religion preaches that celebration of any occasions other than the birth of Christ are wrong, as is the case for Jehovah Witnesses. My mother was a kindergarten teacher for some 20 years and her creativity was sorely taxed on occasion attempting to figure ways to not have these children feel left out and at the same time not having their parents show up in the principal's office afterward and voice their displeasure since celebratory occasions other than the celebration of the birth of Jesus was against their religion. Truly tedious.

When I was a kid, there was a girl who lived across the alley from us who's family were Jehovah's Witnesses. We played together often. She was great at catching bugs, and lizards, and stuff!
When we had holiday celebrations at school, she didn't come that day. We all knew it was because of her religion, and nobody cared! She was just another kid to us, and a good friend to me. Her parents didn't demand that the entire school change to accommodate their beliefs. I don't feel like the majority should be forced to change their traditions in order to make the minority happy.

Jehovah's Witnesses holidays and festivals

Rejection of Holidays

One of the more well-known practices of the Jehovah's Witnesses is their non-celebration of holidays. All holidays, including birthdays, are considered "pagan holidays" and may not be observed by Witnesses. The official website of the Jehovah's Witnesses explains:

Jesus never commanded Christians to celebrate his birth. Rather, he told his disciples to memorialize, or remember, his death. (Luke 22:19, 20) Christmas and its customs come from ancient false religions. The same is true of Easter customs, such as the use of eggs and rabbits. The early Christians did not celebrate Christmas or Easter, nor do true Christians today. The only two birthday celebrations spoken of in the Bible were held by persons who did not worship Jehovah. (Genesis 40:20-22; Mark 6:21, 22, 24-27) The early Christians did not celebrate birthdays. The custom of celebrating birthdays comes from ancient false religions. True Christians give gifts and have good times together at other times during the year. {1}

I don't either. The only reason I brought it up is because it makes me feel badly that any child feels left out. It is what it is.

This PC BS is just that..The very foundation of the simple things in life that give pleasure are no longer acceptable?? Give me a damn break...

If that Principal is so concerned with ethnic diversity maybe he should remember what country he lives in and the children that attend school..Whether foreigner or not, if they are here, then they adopt our philosophy and principal!!

To all of you I say Happy Valentines Day and may it bring you a very special love... A love you deserve, never to be taken away from you at the whim of another!!! May cupids arrow tickle you often and may you smile just because you are loved.......
