They usually run in packs and, like hyenas, have very recognizable calls when they are out hunting. In my hunting days back in Southern Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) I rarely encountered them. They are more common on the plains of East Africa. :-D

Are they plentiful or nearing extinction, if you know?? THeir coats are amazing..

The hyenas appear to be holding their own but the hunting dogs have become an endangered species, specially around ranching areas. They can be hell on cattle, kinda like wolves in this country. :(

A shame..THey should be removed form those areas and taken farther out, set free and allowed to be what they are...Especially if nearing extinction..

That would be a tough task and Africa is a mighty big country. Besides man they have to contend with a number of natural predators and disease.
