Anthony Weiner Documentary Could Mean Trouble for Clinton

A documentary about the failed 2013 political comeback of sex-texter Anthony Weiner — whose wife Huma Abedin is Hillary Clinton's closest aide — could unsettle Clinton's p**********l campaign amid attacks reminding v**ers of her husband's own sex scandals, the New York Times reports.

Citing its preview of the documentary, "Weiner," at the Sundance Film Festival, the newspaper describes the work as "an unfettered look at the implosion of Mr. Weiner's mayoral campaign and a wrenching inside account of the couple's interactions in the aftermath of his second explicit texting scandal."

But the footage also prominently features Abedin as she endures public humiliation about her husband's political scandal, the Times reports.

Among the scenes, it reports, covers the moments right after news broke that Weiner had exchanged lewd messages with women online using the pseudonym Carlos Danger.

"Ms. Abedin maintained a steely calm," the newspaper reports. "When a young campaign staff member, on the verge of tears after the revelations and ensuing media harassment, prepared to leave the couple's Park Avenue apartment, Ms. Abedin offered some advice. 'Just a quick optics thing?' she said to the woman. 'I assume those photographers are still outside. So, you will look happy?' The staff member agreed."

Abedin has run into controversy of her own, the Times notes, with GOP lawmakers questioning her arrangement to accept outside income as a consultant while working for Clinton at the State Department.

Conservative groups have filed lawsuits to press the State Department to make Abedin's emails and employment records public.

And they also question whether she was overpaid nearly $10,000 by the government while on maternity leave in 2012, the Times notes.

"But none of those controversies are as deeply personal or as potentially distracting to Mrs. Clinton's p**********l campaign as the visceral film," the Times reports.

Abedin and Weiner repeatedly asked to be allowed to see the movie but were not allowed to, the Times reports, citing unnamed sources; the filmmakers deny the claim, the Times reports.

The documentary will be released in theaters May 20.

Clinton isn't seen directly in the film, the Times reports.

These documents should have their own news special.
