Healing a Leper
First we should look at some facts about leprosy. It is not fatal but it is contagious. It was a rare disease in that if you were infected a priest could make you live outside the camp. You were totally excluded from society. Reading Leviticus 13:45 and 46, we see that if you walked upon a person not infected you had to verbally warn them that you were unclean. A leper lived a life of shame and humiliation. They couldn’t touch their children, parents, or siblings. A leper sees Jesus and heard of His fame as a healer. Before he requests a healing he has a moment of introspect, (he evaluates his self-worth). He then realizes that all his life he has lived a miserable, selfish, and trifling existence. He finds himself lacking, not worthy of the healing he needs. The question comes into his mind, “why should Jesus heal you? What have you done for anybody?” He can find no answer. The remedy for his life of shame is right in front of him but there is no reason that Jesus should heal him. All he can say is, “if you want to, you can make me clean”. Christ can read minds. He knows what the man is going through and feels his pain. Mark 1:41 say Jesus was moved with emotion before He heals him.
