What destroyed the klan
At one time being in the klan was standing up for American family values. Their primary concern was for morals and family values. Klan membership included businessmen, soldiers, policemen, and politicians. That was before dynamite Charlie blew up a church and killed four little girls in Sunday school during the civil rights movement. The klan was formed after slavery ended. This nation of immigrants lost its identity. What nation your family came from became secondary to skin tone. Europeans became white and Africans became black. To this day there are people who believe they can look at your face and know what language you will speak. Americans from Germany no longer considered themselves German-Americans. They considered themselves white. If you had dark skin, you were considered black. After slavery ended, European-Americans felt they had a right to deny African-Americans the right to be treated like they were. Jim Crow laws were established to encourage racial division. There were separate water fountains provided for each race. A black father could not take his family to the movies or to an amusement park. A black man could not try on clothes that a white man put on his body. To get a sandwich a black man had to go to the back door of a restaurant. No matter what accomplishment that was achieved a black man was considered a boy, it didnt matter if he was a college professor, politician, or preacher, or came from a family that owned slaves themselves. It was during the civil rights movement that the American conscience started to change. Soldiers that drank and ate together in foxholes in Viet Nam could not do so in this country. At this time klan members began to look at themselves and who they stood beside. Light has no fellowship with darkness. Decent men will not tolerate being in an organization that will murder children and routinely practice cruelty and oppression. There were marches for civil rights and America watched as police attacked innocent men who wanted to be treated like men. Martin Luther King used the teachings of Jesus in the fifth chapter of Matthew to change the American conscience. Today the klan now calls itself the Arian Brotherhood. Where they used to lynch men in trees now they are nowhere near the force they used to be. We can thank dynamite Charlie and the court that found him innocent for helping to awaken the American conscience.
