(Author Unknown)
He was getting old and paunchy, and his hair was falling fast.
And he sat around the Legion telling stories of his past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes, everyone.
And though sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his legion buddies listened for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a Soldier died today.
He was just a common soldier, and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to cleanup all the troubles that others often start.
If we cannot give him honor, while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage, at the ending of his days.
Perhaps a simple notice in a paper that would say,
"Our Country is in mourning, 'cause a Soldier passed away."

Great poem with a message. I am glad patriotism is coming back. We nearly lost it in the Viet-Nam years when soldiers were spat upon and called baby k**lers.

I salute you, Opie, and you too PG, and all other service men and women.
Thank you, each of you for your service.

Do your words count for those of us who served till 1957 and the release date. Today a woman asked me if I was a veteran and my answer was that I got out of the Army in 1957 which was 58 years ago. She replied that too many vets aren't thought of as anything much when they were in that long ago.
I am so glad that I managed to get out before patriotism died because of Vietnam. I told that woman that everybody my age either couldn't qualify or did serve. The Draft was still around and we all got to take part.
I loved the Army, especially my job that would have been the same if combat would have been going on. We "spied" on the Russians, East Germans, Hungarians and Poles and I loved every minute of being able to tell my people just where any combat people from those countries was located at any time.
Thanks for the poem, Slat.

Damn right. Soldiers don't pick their battles anyway. The i***ts in Washington do. I respect and am grateful for all of even the Vietnam vets.
