Yale Fraternity Party: ‘White Girls Only’

Sofia Petros-Gouin, a Columbia University freshman, visited friends at Yale University over the weekend. She attended a Halloween party at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity house on Friday and saw a white SAE member standing at the crowded entrance, telling a group of Black and Latino women they couldn’t come in.

“He held his hand up to their faces and said, ‘No, we’re only looking for white girls,’” Petros-Gouin said.

“No one seemed particularly outraged,” she told Mic. “I was shocked.”

She said none of the other fraternity brothers “censored him or anything.”

In a Facebook post the following day, Yale student Neema Githere agreed with Petros-Gouin’s claim that non-white females were denied entrance to the party, as she and her friends had a similar experience last year:

I’d just like to take a moment to give a shoutout to the member of Yale’s SAE chapter who turned away a group of girls from their party last night, explaining that admittance was on a “White Girls Only” basis; and a belated shoutout to the SAE member who turned me and my friends away for the same reason last year. God Bless the USA.

Additional students at Yale, an Ivy League school, shared similar experiences in the comments section. A Latina student wrote:

Reminds me of the time they asked me and a group of other Latino, predominantly Mexican, friends for our passports when we tried to go to their shi–y party a little over a year ago… So sorry this sh-t is still happening! Can’t stand those rich, spoiled and rude brats.

An SAE member spoke anonymously to the Washington Post. He said members of the house let everyone in until a party gets crowded, and they always ask for Yale IDs. He added that no one with a Yale ID was turned away before 11:15 p.m., and after a noise complaint from Yale and New Haven police, they stopped letting people in. He said the SAE member working the door at the time was Black and that a Black woman denied entry yelled at him and accused him of barring her because of her race.

However, Petros-Gouin told the Post a white SAE member denied the Black and Latino women entrance between 10:30 and 11 p.m.

“He pulled a blonde girl up from the bottom of the stairs — over some people — pushed her inside and said, ‘We are looking for white girls only, white girls only,’” she recalled.

A male student, who asked to remain anonymous, said around midnight he arrived at the party with a group of female friends. He was “pushed away” by a SAE member who said, “‘Who the (expletive) do you think you are — you’re clearly gay.’” But the fraternity brother let his friends in. The student said he also heard members saying, “white girls only.”

The fraternity denies the allegations. SAE’s national spokesperson Brandon Weghorst said the fraternity is investigating and that SAE leadership “has zero tolerance for any behaviors or actions that deviate from our values, mission and creed.”

SAE, founded in 1856, has previously been accused of having r****t traditions. In March, a video went v***l of members of the chapter at the University of Oklahoma taking part in a r****t chant, using a slur for Black people and referencing lynching. Two SAE students identified as leaders in the r****t chanting video were expelled. Following the incident, the national chapter announced initiatives to deter r****t behavior.

Other predominantly white colleges around the country, including SUNY Plattsburgh (71 percent) and the University of Louisville (77 percent), have also recently made headlines for racial discrimination on campus.

Party list may be much shorter this season of joy.... and your report neglected to point out a noise complaint was called in and no one was admitted to the party after 11:15 PM. Also, prior to the complaint, no one with a Yale ID was turned away. Lastly, the individual making the complaint that it was a "white girl party" was Neema Githere who was not at the party and had not attempted entry to said party, was miles away making stupid comments on her facebook page.

One other thing. If I am an inbred, then give this some thought. Since the Fraternity is sanctioned by Yale and the university receives federal funds they do not have the right to exclude people by race. Yale can, and should revoke their charter.

There is a tree that grows in your mother country, it is called The "Boscia albitrunca" tree, it has roots that can grow up to 225 feet. Pretty impressive if it did not suck all the life giving water from every other plant in the area just to survive. You may be wondering what this has to do with you. The way this tree grows is like your mental illness, your inability to remain focused upon a topic or engage in constructive dialogue because the root of your shame grows so deep you have to lie about your achievements to make yourself believe you are equal to others. You must resort to name calling because your education level is underdeveloped and your shame of not completing or even starting a path to educational goals keep your mind locked in inner city slang, cursing and making believe you are tough. And you have to demean or degrade any other race or people who overcome obstacles and succeed. They succeeded while you and many like yourself remain failures.

Researchers now recognize that the narcissistic personality disorder's roots are in self loathing and an all-embracing shame. As such, it is probably the force behind all the DSM-IV traits, which is one reason you aspired to, but never achieved your educational goals. Sadly, without professional help your feelings of emptiness, inadequacy and fears of rejection and abandonment will only persist and get worse as you age. It is important for you to realize that you are suffering from shame rather than guilt. There is a world of difference, guilt allow one to recognize that they are the cause of failure, failed relationships and failures in their chosen professions. Guilt allows you to see how your actions are wrong-something not in line with your values--and may hurt someone else. It's an emotional warning sign that points the way to better behavior. But, shame well that is an entirely different animal. Toxic shame, on the other hand, isn't about making a mistake. It's about feeling like you are a mistake: intrinsically bad based on the fact that you exist. If other people find out about your "badness,' they will surely leave you. And the way you hide behind gutter language, insulting, and name calling you appear to be in that toxic shame. You consistently respond with name calling when you are faced with information you find objectionable or challenges your tribe. I will not hazard a guess of where your mental issue arise, but it is apparent that you are a seriously ill individual.

I could sit here an write comforting words, assure you that you are not a failure, but that would do you more harm than good. It would only feed your narcissistic personality disorder and with that your shame of underachievement. I will not do that, but I will encourage you to get professional help. Perhaps with intensive therapy you too can share in the happiness that "normal" people enjoy. I wish you the best of luck.

If you had taken the time to research, you would have found that one individual made a big deal of the Halloween party, and she was not turned away in fact she was in another location and only heard that people were not admitted. Indeed you would have found that anyone who had a Yale identification, were freely admitted to the party up until the police were called due to excessive noise and after that point, no other people were allowed to join in the party. Indeed, this appears to be in the same category as the Oakland fire fighter caught up in his lies about r****t treatment. Or like the black state representative in Texas who claimed r****t behavior and was proved to be lying. I know it is easy to jump to conclusions, and that is the reason that I always recommend allowing investigations to play out...allow all the facts be known before choosing a side.

The fraternity in question is still in suspended status and thereby is not sanctioned or funded by Yale. May 2011, "In a letter to students and faculty members on Tuesday, Mary Miller, dean of Yale College, said the Executive Committee, the college’s disciplinary board, had imposed sanctions on the chapter, which is not an official student organization. The fraternity will no longer be able to communicate with students via the Yale bulletin board or Yale e-mail, and its use of the university name will be severely limited." Ergo, they are not sanctioned by the University and will not be eligible for reinstatement until 2016. So your supporter, Kevin, did not do her homework and research. Also, she did not offer a objection to the researched information, that is the little girl crying because "only white girls" could attend the party was no place even close to the party. And that all Yale identification holding people were freely admitted to the party until the complaint of noise was made to the police.

Regarding your proclamation that your illness works for you.... that is the typical response from those suffering from personality disorder. They deny they have problems, when things go wrong it is always the fault of the other person. People who are secure and confident are able to say, "Hey, I made a mistake." People who are shame-based believe that nothing can ever be their fault; thus they blame and criticize others as a way to avoid feeling defective and insignificant. So, you prove again that you have deep-seated emotional problems, you are in need of help.

Now you are ranting, and your rant clearly shows disassociate patterns. This too fits into your personality disorder. Pathological anger or rage can manifest in many ways, including chronic resentment, embitterment, hostility, hatred, temper tantrums, rage attacks, and frequently, verbal and physical abuse. As written in my prior response to you, pathological anger and narcissistic personality often overlap and usually manifest itself in the late early stages of breakdowns.

You are not alone, Chris Harper took to social media and ranted on and on about other people using similar terms you used in this rant. Equally creepy were the ranting of Jared Lee Loughner, James Homes, Adam Lanza and Dylaan Root. And we know how they ended up. Your rants to individual posters coupled with your anti-Semitism are worrisome. Again, I encourage you to get professional help.

There is little wonder that the sale of guns have exploded over the past few years. And that reason rests with people like you who know they need help, but refuse. Brings back to mind the following quote from one founding father: “Each individual of the society has a right to be protected by it in the enjoyment of his life, liberty and property, according to standing laws. He is obliged, consequently, to contribute his share to the expense of this protection; to give his personal service, or an equivalent, when necessary... The people have a right to keep and to bear arms for the common defense. The people of this commonwealth have the sole and exclusive right of governing themselves... All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties...” So with the ever increasing people who support and defend terrorist groups, such as ISIS (as you did in this post) many people are taking notice of those with "anger issues" and in particular those who also show other signs of mental illness (such as those who r**t and burn down their own towns) and are rushing to not only purchase quality weapons but learning how to use them. Do not become another reason for more gun sales, get the help you need.
