Then you would put the inmates out of work. There are way to many "citi-kids" with way to much idle time on their hands, and technology to play with. We obviously grew up in different times as for what is available to kids now. I was always close to a forest, and open fields. We had our imaginations for fun things to do and games to play, rather then technology.

We never bought our kids anything that they would not learn something from. The technology that you describe is one thing I never bought them. If they got it, they earned it themselves. Then they knew what it was really worth and took care of it. Same thing with their first car. They earned it. And there is one thing I can brag on my kids about. They were never in trouble with the law or have ever been expelled from school. My husband would have set their little butts on fire if they had, and they would have given up everything they valued for at least 6 months.

I could, of course, be totally wrong, but I suspect most of these businesses were started merely to become bankrupt after getting so much money they didn't earn and shouldn't have been entitled to. Bet none of the owners are on food stamps.

The way the s**m works is that the company is given taxpayer money. The company donates a sizeable sum back to the Democrat Party. More large sums of money are used to pay over inflated salaries of the upper echelon of the company, and only then does the company go bankrupt. The taxpayer are the loser. The Democrat Party keeps millions. The people in the company running this s**m make millions.

Here in AZ where the sun never stops shinning, the solar panels became very popular. The electric company was loosing money, so guess what. If you are off the grid, you get a bill from the electric company to pay for those who are on the grid. That is right, you have to pay $100 to $500 a month depending on the size of your house. If you do not pay, they put a lien on your home.

Upon reading your post my first thought was "that can't be right". So I looked it up and it turns out it isn't.

Just because you have solar panels on your roof doesn't mean you're off-grid. The only reliable thing that can be said for solar electric is it doesn't work every night. Does all the power in your home go off every night? Of course not! That's because when your solar cells stop generating electricity, you use power from the grid.

What APS (Arizona Public Service) is saying is that people with solar panels are still connected to the grid, but because of the lower bills from supplying power to the grid when the sun is shining, they are not paying their fair share towards the maintenance of the grid, while still enjoying all the benefits of it.

If you were truly off-grid they could not charge you, but then you wouldn't be able to cool your house at night.

All true, except you forgot about the company upper-echelons giving themselves multi-million dollar bonuses at the end for doing such a good job at going bankrupt.

Interesting comment. However, it seems that your comment about the growth of glaciers disagrees with about ever article written or spoken. It would be nice to see a credible (nonpolitical and scientific) source for such a statement.

No competition. I would be willing to take the job. I could bankrupt them twice as fast for half the money.

Ginny, I live in AZ and have several friends who are off the grid and I've never heard a single word about their having to pay the electric company, though I'll certainly check it out. Are you sure they are being charged without using any electricity? Maybe they are being charged for something else? Are they not hooked up to electricity at all? My friends are conservative people and I can't believe they would sit still for being charged for what they do not receive, yet they all seem to be quite happy with their solar power.

I'm not sure, I thnk california has the same crap going on. I also think that if you are on a wind mill grid the you pay for some of the lost revenue back to the electric company. Maybe some one who is actually experiencing this can shed some light on it.

I can remember when kids picked up soda bottles for the penny, and later 2 cent deposit. I did it to have money to go to the movies (we called them shows then) with. And I can remember when grocery bags were paper and people saved them to use as trash bags. They broke down in the landfills and soon disappeared. But then plastic made an appearance and we have filled our landfills with them, and they take hundreds of years to break down. I believe if we went back to glass soda and milk bottles and paper bags, we could do a lot for the burgeoning garbage and trash problem. If we would take away the unheard of allowances that we give to our kids, then just maybe they would again clean up our roadsides of part of the trash that is scattered by pigs that don't know what a trash can is supposed to be used for.

Yes! I remember all this and more. There were lots more uses for those brown sacks than just garbage, we used them to cool cookies on, for scribble paper for kids, sand lights, and wrapping for boxes when we stored something away for a long time. We do need to return to many of the old ways. But, we can incorporate new technology. For example, instead of cutting down more trees to make the brown bags, we can recycle the bags. What is wrong with composting the biodegradables and recycling the sacks to make more. Glass bottles can be recycled to form countertops instead of mining quarts. And the list goes on. Yes, returning to a more natural state is excellent. I simply h**e those plastic bags and the rings that hold sodas together.

Great post! Thank you.

Yes. I am in the West valley and I am hooked up to the meter, but it runs backwards. So, I am actually putting electricity back into the grid. I live in a big house and it is just me and my cat. The roof is solar, not just panels but a solar tile roof. My AC was replaced with a solar AC and my hot water is also solar. I use no electricity from the grid and still get billed. I have a letter someplace that they sent me regarding the charges and it specifically says that the charge is to support the grid, its maintenance, staff, administrative people, and so on.
