Separation of Church and State

This principle was not put forth by Secular Humanists, Liberals, or Atheists; it was put forth by Christians, our Founding Fathers, as a fundamental basis for the new republic of America. The memory of the Christian colonists of the oppression and persecution by Christian Nations was still fresh; they wanted liberty from the tyranny of religion. To worship as one pleased was not possible in Europe; one had to be of a certain Christian denomination or suffer the consequence. The principle of the separation of Church and State was to protect the citizens from being a Christian Nation. The recent shenanigans of a scofflaw Kentucky clerk might have sparked open rebellion back in the early days of the republic by Christians sick and abused by one denomination's dominance.

The present cry of so-called "religious freedom" to force one's beliefs on the general public might have been met by a Christian bullet or an outraged Christian mob. Kim Davis epitomizes what the colonists and our Founding Fathers abhorred: the intolerant application by government limiting a citizen's free exercise of their rights. Backing Kim Davis by England would have worked just as well as intolerable taxation by them.
