Did Jesus have power to raise himself from the dead?

Mat 26:61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

Mark 14:58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

John 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

Eph 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by grace ye are saved; 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

John 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have [εξουσιαν] power to lay it down, and I have [εξουσιαν] power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. [εξουσιαν is the accusative feminine singular form of the noun εξουσια = authority, right, ability, supernatural power.

αποκτανθηναι and εγερθηναι are passive infinitives. Just as Jesus was killed, he was raised]; he neither killed himself, nor raised himself.

Acts 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Jesus was talking about his "Body, the church" which he certainly raised upon his resurrection, for forty days and nights when he was among his disciples, teaching them and reminding them of the Prophets, and the Psalms, and the Law, which were about Messiah.

"And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. 50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen."[LUKE 24:44-53]

As for "This commandment I received..." it was a choice given to the son by the Father; and the choice was based upon the terrible things Jesus had recently suffered at the hands of Men; The issue was whether Jesus the man could still forgive Men for the indignities and brutal tortures they had practiced upon him. God gave Jesus the choice of being raised from the dead, or remaining among the dead, to bask in his Father's bosom.

Jesus chose to complete the program designed and ordered by His Father, as the Messianic Hope of all mankind.

" I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again."[vs 18] That word "Power" is NOT dunamis; the power of strength. It is the power of Authority [εξουσιαν].

"No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have [εξουσιαν] power to lay it down, and I have [εξουσιαν] power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. [εξουσιαν is the accusative feminine singular form of the noun εξουσια = authority, right, ability, supernatural power. No one else had this authority given because it is only offered to the only-begotten from the dead. At some time appointed by the Father, God will raise all men, but that time is not yet.

Jesus was given a choice whether to rise to walk again among men, or to remain forever among the dead, until the general resurrection. He chose to be raised, and ascend to His Father's right hand to the second place in the kingdom; and to become in fact, "The Logos Of God" which is the name of a plan in the mind of God, wherein Jesus would dwell in the flesh of the saints who had conformed to the image of God's dear son.

This is also why the name "The Logos Of God" was not given to him previous to this decision; it all was dependent upon this decision to overcome any animus resulting from his treatment by his fellow men. And he rose to the occasion, magnificently. And he rules second only to the Father, until the last enemy is destroyed, and that enemy is "Death" itself.

Amen. We serve the one and only living God. We are so blessed He has sent His Holy Spirit to dwell inside of us. He has chosen us. We are only worthy because He has deemed us worthy. Praise God. He loved us when we were still His enemies. God is good. I pray I always realize I am desperate for Him. I love because He first loved me. Thanks Theo. God bless you.

If He had not first loved us, how could we possibly know to learn of Him? It is only because He loved us enough to reveal Himself to us, that we can even make our feeble apologies to Him when we falter.

And you are correct Rufus, He loved us while we were still His enemies, even in our ignorance. Ever wonder why ignorance is so popular? I am ignorant of the reason for this.

It must be because of the fall. I imagine Adam and Eve were much more intelligent than we will ever be. They walked and talked with God in the garden. Adam lived to be over 900 years old. I don't know how old he was when he sinned and changed everything. Animals and humans did not eat meat or each other. God had given us all grasses and herbs etc. It must have been wonderful to walk among the animals giving them names. There will be peace during the thousand years when Jesus rules here in earth from His throne in Jerusalem. I believe we struggle with ignorance because we rejected God and bought in to the lies of Satan. But God will rectify this and we will once again worship and honor Him and Satan will be destroyed forever. It will be a new beginning as God intended it to be.
