What boat were you on...I was on the Plunger (594) and then the USS Pintado. I help decommission the Plunger in Vallejo in '89.

I was assigned to the USS WASP (CVS-18) and on the way to Gibraltar to relieve the USS TARAWA (CV-40) we 22were involved in a collision with USS HOBSON (DMS-26) during
nighttime fly-ops. We struck her amidships and cut her in two,
sinking in 3 minutes. They lost 176 men and we rescued 26.

We suffered a 75-foot gash in our bow, lost both chain lockers,
anchors still housed and both chains h*****g. We hauled the chains in with the capstans and the crew man-handled the chains from the forecastle to the hangar deck.

BUBBLEHEAD BOB here.

To continue from my last:

The ship had to back al the way back to New York for fear of losing the overh*****g flight deck.

When the ship arrived at the New York Shipyard Annex in Bayonne, NJ, the bow of the USS HORNET (CV-12) was mounted
on a large barge. The drydock gate was pulled away by a tug and the barge was drawn in first. Then we were pulled into the
dock and set on the keel-blocks. The rough edges of our bow were removed with cutting torches, the the HORNET'S bow was pulled along and fitted to our ship. The whole operation took only ten days by the "Can Do" shipyard.

When did your son serve aboard the Dixon? I was in San Diego from '86 to '88 any chance he was serving in that timeframe?
