Paraphrasing Mark Twain on Religion

I believe Mark Twain referenced the Presbyterian Church in his quote, but I paraphrase for my own background:

"I don't go to church, but the church I don't go to is Episcopalian."

This article gives a good outline abut why I find my background in the Episcopal Church to be a valuable thing, even if I can't honestly count myself a good believer these days. Worth reading, at least to gain a little understanding of a differing point of view.

I reference Twain often. From his biography, I pull the following excerpt:

'The easy confidence with which I know another man's religion is folly teaches me to suspect my own is, also. I would not interfere with anyone's religion, either to strengthen or weaken it. I am not able to believe one's religion can affect his hereafter one way or the other, no matter what that religion may be. But it may easily be a great comfort to him in his life...hence it is a valuable possession to him.'

BTW, A very informative list...nice, indeed :!:

I especially like this quote from him:

So much blood has been shed by the Church because of an omission from the Gospel: "Ye shall be indifferent as to what your neighbor's religion is." Not merely tolerant of it, but indifferent to it. Divinity is claimed for many religions; but no religion is great enough or divine enough to add that new law to its code....

And this as well~~

I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's.

I have used both those quotes in the past. The second one, in particular, I have used on OPP more than once.

Mark Twain and Will Rogers are probably my two most go-to individuals for quotes. They were both extraordinarily common men.

I like #5 as it is more aligned to my personal belief..I believe in God and my Faith of Him, not what some secular denomination is going to tell me about what I should believe or how I will minister to myself..

The Church for me is the "moral reinforcer," not my personal belief..That is between God and I......

What is important,,, is: Does God KNOW what religion he is??? Its only "us" fighting over it..

Like the fleas fighting over the dog we are on....
