When I was stationed in Okinawa,(1969) my house kinda overlooked Kadena Air Base,I watched the SR-71 take off many times,I always heard that those planes were making HI-speed runs over North Vietnam,But,never confirmed.

My brother was on Okinawa during Viet Nam. He was a fuel specialist. Apparently the SR71 used a special fuel that was similar to penetrating oil, and was authorized to leak! He also told me that the B-52's based there took off with barely enough fuel to get airborne, then refueled in mid-air while proceeding to Viet Nam. This allowed them to deliver more weight of bombs per sortie.

I thought that they were for high altitude spying, not bombing.

The SR-71 was a spy plane, the B-52 a bomber. Both need fuel.
