This song has always been my oldest son's favorite piece of music since he was about 11. He went around singing it all the time but the Star Spangled Banner done properly was always beyond that one.
Anyway here is a good explanation of what American Pie may have meant to the writer. I have always loved this one since McLean wrote it and so many parts of it take me with them.

I always really liked this one and my son had it going in his room all the time. I had pretty well figured all of this out long ago but there are some suggestions that caused me to think a bit different.
