WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage across the United States Friday in a closely divided ruling that will stand as a milestone in its 226-year history.

The justices ruled 5-4 that states cannot deny gay men and lesbians the same marriage rights enjoyed for thousands of years by opposite-sex couples. Within days if not hours, the decision is expected to trigger same-sex marriages in states that still ban the practice.

"They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law," Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his 28-page ruling. "The Constitution grants them that right."

Within minutes, county clerks in Michigan, one of the states being sued by same-sex couples, said they would begin issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. "I cannot imagine forcing them to wait a moment longer," said Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum.

Kennedy announced the decision to a hushed courtroom; his colleagues watched stone-faced. As the sweep of his decision became clear, some in the audience embraced and cried.

     I agree. Do not believe the gay lifestyle is a choice as gay mannerisms manifest themselves early in some children's lives. I have not seen any concrete proof either way so am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. PS: they might look odd to us but we look odd to them as well.
Good Luck America !!!

I for one really don't care, but don't believe for a minute this was about equal rights. Gays could have gotten the same protection by the court utilizing and recognizing civil unions. By changing the definition of marriage the gay community has put their foot in the door to redefine their idea of h**e speech. Just ask Canada. 2005 they legalized same sex marriage. Now gay rights trump the people of Canada's personal religious rights.

The Supreme Court has done more damage to itself than it can imagine. The damage to the nation is incalculable and if they think they have solved anything, they really don't understand what they have done.

It was a political action. Not their job, but did it for their boss. He can't do anything else right, so he is just going to damage as much as he can.

Keeping peoples rights from them isn't a relgious right. So if by "gay rights now trump relgious rights." You must mean how they can get married and that is apparentley taking relgious rights away, but your wrong. Because that was never a right to begin with. Your aloud to be relgious. Your relgion is not aloud to impede on other peoples rights because it is not a right to impede others rights, that doesn't make any sense that some people think that is your right. It honestly baffles me. for what seems to me to be, you simply don't like them or something. Have you seen some of the videos of people finally getting married some had been together for 30-40 years prob even longer. They were crying they were so happy. How could anyone be against that. If your god is against that, then screw your god he's a bigot. Get a better one, one thats not an asshole.

What has the supreme court done? Please tell me, what do you think is going to happen because gay marreige is legal? Tell me how 'cause and effect' are going to be relevant in anything bad happening? What are people going to do? Are they going to start a revolution because gay marraige is legal? You think the majority of our nation is suddenly going to change their minds? Or you going to try and k**l %70 of your own nation and claim its "justice." Because you just h**e gays that much? They are so evil, you k**led 200,000,000 people, women and children so that gays cant get married. Tell me what exactly you think is going to happen? You going to convince the majority of the country to be h********c like you?

Its over. Gay marreige is legal. Deal with it.
