At least not for this 19 year old. Maybe a for profit doctor would have paid better attention to her complaints.

Yep. That British single payer healthcare system is a horror show.

This circumstance is tragic and avoidable, but it is not caused by the British public health system. Keep in mind that the third largest cause of death in the United States at 440,000 a year is hospital and medical errors. The cause in all cases is neglect and misuse of limited resources. Our rate of medical foulups are greater than in the UK, France, Austraulia and Canada. Obviously the so called free market has little to do with it, a lack of regulation, resources and enforcement is the much more likely cause. http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/newsroom/display/hospitalerrors-thirdleading-causeofdeathinus-improvementstooslow

Errors? Nice try Kevyn but in the UK patients get left in parked ambulances to die (no room in the inn so to speak). left without food and water, etc because the staff is more concerned with meeting government imposed "targets" than caring for patients.

They were recently found abusing the system by withdrawing food and water to hasten the death of patients.

An error is when you sew somebody up and whoops you forget and leave a clamp inside.

This type of behavior isn't an error or a bug in the system. It's a feature.

The audacity of brilliance at work. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listen twice as much as you speak. It's lost on governments.

There will ALWAYS be bad Doctors, bad Nurses and other bad staff - everywhere you go. Being a "for profit" Doctor is no guarantee of sk**l or excellence, we have ample proof of that here already. So this instance has NOTHING to do with the system of health care - it has to do with Doctors being humans.

Unfortunately its endemic of the system.

It's not an error, it's not being human, it's not a bug in the system.

It's a feature of the UK single payer system.

Canadian friends of mine report similar treatment for pregnancy/birth issues for their latest grandson. I believe the motivation is different in for profit vs, single payer and I prefer the for profit system. Which, I might add, desperately needs its users to become way more involved in its implementation & use! Question those hospital bills, folks. You KNOW that $15 for one of those little soft pacs of Kleenex is ridiculous but when Medicare began paying the bills for us, we quit questioning the costs and doctors & hospitals noticed this. Which is when the PRICE of medical care skyrocketed into a dimension that has virtually NO relation to the COST of that service.
