An amazing feat of aviation engineering for a piston driven aircraft of it's time.
Up there with the P51 and the British Spitfire. A high speed low pass gives a dose of the goosebumps to anyone.

I was in VMR 142 starting in 1949 till 1954 and worked on many of them. I was on the line crew and got warm them up. Most of them were FG1D's then went to the F4U-5N. Got lots of taxi time. H**ed to work on the hot FL sun but that is where I landed after I was kicked out of the hanger. Not fun trying to replace an exhaust port, in a cylinder, when out in the sun but I had to and did.
Those were the good old days.
