Yellow Mare's Choice

This is one of my favorite stories (myths?) in Native American lore. It shows how well Native Americans understood human nature, as far as the man-woman relationship:

There are four stallions, each a different color: black, white, spotted, red. And one mare, Yellow Mare. Every morning, Yellow Mare chose one of the stallions to run with that day.

Yellow Mare represented the Sun, and each stallion was one of the four winds: North, South, East, West. The weather for that day was then determined by the stallion she chose to run with!!

You see, it is the female of the species who chooses!!

Ever watch the monkeys in the zoo? One day as I watched one of the females walked up to a grizzled old male and "presented". He sniffed, shook his head violently "NO!" and looked away. The females do not always get their way.

On the human side, it is only in the civilized world that the woman gets to choose. Try that theory in Africa or any Arab country.

You missed the point. The female needs to be asked, before she can choose. Anyway, the story was only an allegory, not necessarily factual.

Have you ever seen a stallion courting a mare?

Most Muslim fathers feel they should choose for their daughters. In their mind, young daughters will not choose a husband for the very things she will need in life, as her father can do.
