I KNOW I AM OPENING A CAN OF WORMS, BUT IF I GET ENOUGH OF THEM I CAN GO FISHING. I will answer with what the Bible says, after a few comments. I just want to see what others think first. The correct answer is yes.

Since they didn't have the modern day storage and coolers that we have to day fomentation was the only way of preserving the grape juice for drinking purpose. If it was stored any other way the juice would spoil and the people would get ill.

It was alcoholic, of course, or why were their cautions in the Bible about drunkness, as when Jesus said he was called a drunkard for having wine.

I remember when I arrived in Germany in 1956 and found most Germans drinking beer and wine instead of water. Their water table was not so deep and the water was pretty dangerous since they fertilized with only what came out of their honey wagons. That would be those wagons they mixed what they took out of their barnyards with water and sprayed on their crops, even on the grass they used for hay. I think there are many people who don't understand this and that it had to be done in many lands from the beginning. Christians who drank wine weren't all drunkards although I don't know about the atheists in this country.

Even if they had had refrigeration if they had kept grape juice long enough it would have still fermented into alcohol.

I have a question of my own: does it really matter?

In all reality no. It has been a question that has been bantered about among the evangelicals for years and has never been answered yet.

It would be nice. There were years when we didn't have to worry about much more than that but it seems so long ago.
