Ephesians 2:8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

O Gift of Gifts O Grace of Faith

1 O gift of gifts! O grace of faith!
My God, how can it be
That Thou, who hast discerning love,
Shouldst give that gift to me?

2 How many hearts Thou mightst have had
More innocent than mine,
How many souls more worthy far
Of that sweet touch of Thine!

3 Ah, grace, into unlikeliest hearts
It is thy boast to come;
The glory of thy light to find
In darkest spots a home.

4 How can they live, how will they die,
How bear the cross of grief,
Who have not yet the light of faith,
The courage of belief?

5 The crowd of cares, the weightiest cross,
Seem trifles less than light;
Earth looks so little and so low
When faith shines full and bright.

6 O happy, happy that I am!
If thou canst be, O faith,
The treasure that thou art in life,
What wilt thou be in death.

Sorry, I am a quick study but not a deep studier of scripture. I call myself a Christian but feel most Christians would not agree. That is not here nor there. What I got from Eph2:8, which was not written by Paul, is a big enigma. The only palatable answer I can find, again not being a scholar or a great student of the Bible, is that we are naturally prone to God and the kingdom. The worldly is not nearly enough to satisfy, and this is the grace given to all. Accepting this grace or not is beyond all understanding as mortals. The nature of grace, as far as I can see, is the greatest mystery we have, and one I feel is without real resolution. My faith is a gift, grace is the giver, yet why me to accept it?

The epitome of grace to me is not in the Bible but a beloved song: "Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace that fear relieved." The yin and yang totality of grace. No rules, meaning and purpose changing with maturity, what once worked now a detriment, what seemed solid now groundless.

Yes, I admit, it reminded me of "Amazing Grace." Words to touch the soul, and lift the spirit.

Thank you, AuntiE
