I find myself in agreement with Rabbi Jack Moline, executive director of the Interfaith Alliance in Washington. Rabbi Moline was quoted as saying: "This so called "Muslim Art Exhibit" where the shooting took place is an event deserving of criticism even without the violence.
I feel Pamela Geller, the organizer of the Muhammad Cartoon Contest got exactly what she wanted from this event, self promotion. She organized this event for one purpose and one purpose only. She wanted international attention and she was willing to gamble with the lives of the people of Garland to achieve her goal.
Most people never heard of Ms Geller before this event. Now she has face time on numerous TV shows as well as articles about herself in the New York Times and many other papers. Way to go Pamela. You only endangered the lives of the people of Garland but hey your self promotion payed off.
This event was not about freedom of speech. This was simply about international attention for a narcissist. She played to the anger many feel toward what they perceive as special rights for the Islamic people. I am sure the security guard who was wounded was happy to assist Ms Geller in becoming famous.
Many of the people in my circle feel the city of Garland was stupid to grant the permit. However, if they had not granted the permit, the ACLU or some other organization would have sued them. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
I read a great deal about the police departments in this country. How do you think the Garland Police felt when this event was announced? I am sure they were not happy. In essence we were asking them to provide security against what could have been an all out attack, for a publicity stunt. Who would have been blamed had bombs gone off? Not the private security people, it would have been the police who took the hit. Not Ms Geller of course. She was only exercising her right to free speech.
If this is not yelling fire in a crowded theater, I don't know what is. If I were a citizen of Garland, I would demand her immediate arrest for putting my children in danger. This was a reckless, wanton act. In a perfect world, nothing would have happened. We do not live in a perfect world. Ms Garland knew what would happen. She was counting on it.
I say stop giving this woman publicity.

I say organize "cartoon contests" of Mohammed all over America, twice a day, 7 days a week, 2007. Versions of the Jimmi Hendrix "Star Spangled Banner" blasting a few times a day in every city in America would also be a fabulous idea; with pork fried rice to be spread into every corner, nook and cranny in OUR free-market Western civilization. I LOVE pork fried rice!!!
It's called 'Freedom of Speak'!

Don't believe it's quite the same thing.

I suppose I should have known. Just another h**e group. How do we breed so many in this country? Anything for a dollar I suppose.
You may not can fool all the people all of the time but you sure can fool a majority most of the time. This country has become a cesspool of hatred. Black people h**e white people, white people h**e black people, non Christians h**e Christians, some Christians h**e Moslems, the middle and upper class h**e the poor, and our government h**es us all. H**e is toxic. It solves nothing.

Is the GOPTP not a anti Muslim group. That's all the TP talks about. Why would you just point to this group. This cartoon contest was excepted with open arms in Garland. Now when something went wrong now the GOPTP turns the tide and loves Muslims. Can't put my arms around hipocracy of the TP
Mmmm, as I said free speech. You know your rights to say what you feel! Do I like that topic, not really but I will defend your rights until death.

Without a doubt the best post on OPP since I have been on this site. H**e in this country is the problem and it's created by groups that just spread propaganda that lacks any kind of common sense.

Do you understand the difference between free speech and deliberately inciting a r**t? I don't know if you remember, but many years ago the American N**i Party wanted to hold a march in Skokie, Illinois, which was known to have a large Jewish population, and this was the reason the N**is chose to hold their march there. The argument against allowing them to march was based on the idea that it would be too offensive and inflammatory and that there "could" be violence. The ACLU (which has a high percentage of Jews among its members) argued in favor of allowing the N**is to march based on the idea that to not do so would be an abrogation of their right to free speech, and the march was held despite the protests.
The bottom line is you can't deny someone or a group the right to expression, even if that expression is offensive to someone. That's why we have a First Amendment, to protect ALL speech, not just speech which is socially acceptable. And if you choose not to give Pamela Geller publicity, that is certainly within your rights and would probably have avoided the incident if more people had made that choice in the first place. But what she did is not the same as yelling fire in a crowded theater, as provocative as it was.
It is also true that she was known for behind the main person behind anti-Muslim ads on buses, I think in New York. At any rate, she should not have been given a permit, She is a h**e-monger who put an entire community at risk for her own publicity. At some point there is a line -- a very fine and delicate one -- where protecting the safety of the public trumps freedom to exercise h**e speech.

I am in complete agreement. I knew nothing of this organization prior to Garland. I am not interested in h**e groups. It appears I need to be.
