Does anyone know what they are doing in these formations? Is this a feeding maneuver or maybe a mating maneuver? Wh**ever it is it is spectacular.

Since starlings are ground feeders, that can't be it. Doesn't look like courting behavior either, as it would serve no purpose in that regard. It could be for flock protection because predators couldn't get as many. I think it is bonding behavior, so keep the flock connected as this is definitely a flocking species. Maybe someone knows the actual purpose, I am just using an educated guess.

I heard they do that to scare away predators. The predator thinks it's something big and scary. I once saw a video of a hawk approaching a big bunch of starlings and they started (mumering?) forming like that and the hawk flew away.
