"Hoi Polloi" refers to common, everyday people, as opposed to aristocrats. The "Helots" I referred to were s***es of the ancient Spartans.

I somehow remember a film with Fred Astaire in which they referred to the hoi palloi as if it were upgrading. There was also a song using the term. Just forget this post if I'm wrong.

My grandparents used it quite a bit for the 'upper class' of their times. I have heard it little since my youth, but remember it well. :wink:
