If you have space in and outdoors, with a roosting area boxes where they can lay, they're really easy...throw some feed out daily and let them forage to their heart's content. Get one rooster and they'll pretty much take care of themselves except you have to also gather the eggs..
A dozen laying hens and soon you'll be selling or.giving away eggs.
Fun job for a kid. Get a pair of peafowl for the best burglar alarm /watchdog

Ask Reverend Wright. He's always talking about chickens coming home to roost.

I'll have to learn how to wistle to call hen to rooster. Never had lamb, nor plan to, Beef Steaks and potatoes on my western table, along with pork. Eggs will be nice, fresh. Turkey is not baked in this house, but deep fried, know what baking can do to the Turkey.

OBTW, I'm passing all this information to my daughter, I'm just the chicken sitter/babysitter/grandson sitter & Loud Mouth.

I didn't mean to break your eardrum, but I had to somehow get your attention.

I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy but, lamb is really great too. I knew some people that had free-range lamb products and they were delicious.

I still let Mrs. Rock bake the bird while I get deep fried and just watch football. By God, that's the American way!

About the best way to get a man's attention Mom... Ya ever watch TV?

Sí señor, you hablas la verdad...

It is written that,

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?

~1 Corinthians 5:5

I fear you boast so much and so often, you just attract all of us loafers on here wherever you go.

It always good to know you're kneaded someplace, am I right?

They still remember that their ancestors were therapod dinosaurs. For all the good that that does them. . . I.e., we eat them and not the other way around.

I think FLOCK has five letters Ma...

Just sayin'.

FYI:

A group of chickens is called a brood or peep. A group of chicks is called a clutch or chattering. A group of cobras is called a quiver. A group of colts is called a rag.

Now, excuse me while I make like a sheep herder and get the flock outta here.

I hope you were able to sort out the posts and find enough information to work with. I asked the neighbors where their Welsomer chickens were purchased and they said Meyers Hatchery. Not knowing where you live I don't know if that would help. They need to get to you a day or at the most two after hatching, as they don't need to eat right away but cannot wait too long. They put them on a special chick starter formula for about a week. He reminded us that you have to watch and make sure they are all eating. they have to learn how to eat, and they don't have a hen to show them, so the neighbor said they put some on their beaks and the chicks ate it and after that all was great.
By the way, in case you didn't know that, chickens do not need a rooster in order to lay eggs. It is just like other animals that ovulate whether they are bred or not. Go on line and read upon how the egg developed before it is laid, it is amazing.

Thank you, my daughter will be getting her chicks from a local feed store, where they bring in the ones that can tolerate our very hot weather during the summers months. Most do not loose their feather, and we got plenty of dust for their dust baths. Thank again.
