"In modern times, scholars have called ain’t “the most stigmatized word in the language” as well as the “most powerful social marker in English.” It is a classic example of a shibboleth—a word used to determine inclusion or exclusion from a group."

Have at it, folks.

I had a sign in my 5th grade class reading,
“I will not use the dreaded “a” word.”
Violators copied that sentence 25 times.

On paper or the blackboard? Or maybe you're too young for blackboards. 😊

I used it once. I was made to stay after school until a parent collected me, at which time my egregious mistake was told to my mother.

Upon returning home, I was confined to my room…daily for a week.

Such a thing I have never done again.

”Where’s it at?” saw a similar punishment.

Paper, in their best cursive handwriting.
I taught 35 years; I know what a blackboard is.

Ah, you would be one of the reasons 75% of high school passed cannot read, write, nor do math. The country owes you and not debt of thanks.

👍👍👍
God bless you! Way more patience than I would ever have. I'm old enough to have been taught the "Palmer" method. And can actually read anything written on a decent Spencerian hand. 😊

Not nice AuntiE. There were some really excellent teachers in the public school system when I was in school (and I suspect when you were too). Kemmer may have been one of them.

Remember, I never attended a public school.

When one considers, within the last decade, approximately 80% of high school graduates could not read, write nor do basic mathematics beyond an elementary school level, I stand by my statement on public school teachers. Unfortunately, the few dedicated teachers leave teaching within five years.

If there were toys in your room that does not seem like a severe punishment.

That explains a lot. Fundamentalist “Christian” school, no doubt. 🙄

I have freely, and publicly, admitted I am math challenged. My practice is to, always, have UncleE check any math I am forced to do.

You would, as usual, be incorrect.
