DES MOINES, Iowa — House Republicans advanced a bill to Gov. Kim Reynolds' desk that would let teachers and school staff to carry guns.
It also requires larger school districts to hire school resource officers, but the bill does give districts an option to opt-out.
"Time and math do not lie," State Rep. Phil Thompson (R-Jefferson) said. "The first 30 seconds in these scenarios are extremely critical. This bill does set a high standard for districts and staff that want to participate in this and want to go the extra mile to protect our kids." They're advancing the measure for the second time after the Senate made a change removing a grant that would've helped schools pay for those SRO's.
"This amendment does nothing to improve this bill," State Rep. Wessel Kroeschell (D-Ames) said. "It does nothing protect children who might be the victim of crossfires of accidents of a gun not being properly stored."
