Self defense is self defense. If he felt his life or safety was in such danger that he needed to carry a weapon, even if it is illegal; it is still self defense.
As for the weapon being illegal, it is only illegal because of misguided efforts to prevent a person in real danger, and in need of having extraordinary protection devices at the ready, of actually saving their life by using those means and causing harm to the person immediately threatening their life or safety.

Jungle-Law is...JUNGLE-LAW. And it works both sides. His attackers had no problem with disparity-in-force, so when the victim improved HIS chances...oh, well.
