I saw that last one in Eastern Tenn. Impressive. This one will probably be my last chance.

I'm thinking of going to southern Indiana. just SW of Bloomington. State recreation areas with parking all around and hopefully far enough away from the urban areas for a peaceful viewing of wildlife and the eclipse. Now praying for cloudless skies.

Don't need to drive for this. Three to 3 1/2 minutes here. Fingers crossed there are no clouds though.

Where you located? I aim to be a few miles from the center line, south of Bloomington, In. State wildlife area where I can also see how the eclipse affects the birds and all. Picked there for what I perceive are easier routes there and home, with the massive traffic jams that will occur. A little over 200 miles to where I'm aiming for. Last time I had friends that went from Southern Illinois back to Chicago in over 12 hours. About 3 hours over what it should be. Like rush hour all the way. I'm opting for main highway but not interstate highway so I'll have good speed limits but hopefully less traffic. Until I hit Chicago. That might be real hell.

As I have paid zero attention, what date and time will this occur? Yes, I am being lazy and not looking it up. You have all the useful information available.

Upstate NY. It goes across the state from Buffalo heading generally east by northeast.

The longest period of darkness in the US is where it crosses into Texas from Mexico.

About 2:00 Central Daylight Savings Time

The Moon’s penumbra first touches Earth at 11:42 a.m. EDT and last contacts it at 4:52 p.m. EDT. The total phase of the eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. EDT, a bit more than 620 miles (998 km) south of the Republic of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean. The umbra remains in contact with Earth’s surface for 3 hours, 16 minutes and 45 seconds, until 3:55 p.m. EDT when it vanishes in the North Atlantic Ocean 340 miles (547 km) southwest of Ireland.

The total length of the 2024 eclipse path is 9,190 miles (14,790 km). The magnitude of this eclipse is 1.0565, which means the Moon’s diameter is 5.65 percent larger than the Sun’s. Only when the magnitude is 1 or more will there be a total eclipse. Greatest eclipse occurs at 2:17 p.m. EDT and the maximum length of totality anywhere on Earth is 4 minutes 28 seconds. That point is just a few miles north of the small town of Nazas, Mexico.

You're lucky. If I'm lucky I'll get there in 4 to 5 hours or just in time.

Wow! I bet it will be worth it though. Going to check the forecast for where you're heading? Maybe you can pick a different spot as a backup if it looks like it will be cloudy.

Considering my current circadian cycle, I will miss it.

That's your prerogative. But if you are anywhere near the line of totality its said to be an amazing experience. And very rare. Only once in a century, as a general rule, does a total eclipse pass over any particular spot on land.

I will make sure ProgenyE and UncleE find the data. UncleE will very definitely be figuring out how best to see it.

A total insomniac prioritizes sleep over most everything. Health and well being of family will move sleep down in priorities but little else will. When my BFF had a heart attack, they had me go take care of her because my circadian rhythms.
