Trump Versus Trump? Part One

March 27, 2024--Victor Davis Hanson—printed on 3/27/24
Almost every effort the Left has employed to destroy Trump has not—at least yet—succeeded. And there remains only one Trump opponent left—Trump himself. Let me explain. In 2016, the Clinton campaign, the DNC, the Perkins Coie law firm, Fusion GPS, and Christopher Steele, all with help from the DOJ, CIA, and FBI, did their best to destroy candidate Trump through the utter farce of “Russian collusion.” That effort sometimes entailed doctoring FISA warrants or cooking up ruses the Jake Sullivan-aided Alfa Bank ping farce. They failed.
From 2017–2021, for the first time in history, the Left impeached a president twice. In unprecedented fashion, it tried Trump in the Senate as a private citizen. It unleashed Robert Mueller with $40 million, 22 months, and the “dream team” of partisan hit lawyers—and failed. Three successive FBI directors either flat-out lied or claimed amnesia or simply stonewalled under oath when asked about the agency’s role in all this “get Trump” obsession. The FBI hired Twitter and other social media outlets to suppress news deemed favorable to Trump. Anthony Blinken helped cook up the laptop/Russian disinformation h**x by urging the roundup of “51 intelligence authorities” to mislead and lie to the public on the eve of a p**********l debate and e******n. Members of Trump’s own administration wrote “anonymous” op-eds promising to sabotage his executive orders. Former generals labeled him a N**i-like figure, a Mussolini, and a kindred of the jailers in Auschwitz. From 2021–2024, the Left rounded up various state officials who tried to remove Trump from state b****ts. They sicced a federal prosecutor Jack Smith on him to prove he was an “i**********nist” and in the manner of Joe Biden removed classified files to his home and knowingly did not contact authorities about such removals.
Satellite leftwing prosecutors in New York and Georgia sought to emulate Smith and gain glory by “getting Trump” as they bragged in their campaigns and fund-raising efforts. So, three of them indicted him, one bootstrapping a once-dropped federal campaign violation into a state law charge. Another warped racketeering laws to prosecute Trump as an e******n denialist. And still a third distorted laws never so used previously to go after a borrower, namely by claiming Trump overvalued his assets to obtain bank loans that were paid off promptly and with lucrative interest to the banks—that were more than happy to loan to Trump and had no complaints about his lucrative business. No matter—Trump faced a $355 million fine that will likely cost him $400 million when paid. The ingredients of these politicized indictments always remained the same: leftwing prosecutor, leftwing jury pool, leftwing judge, and leftwing media coverage. A Silicon Valley billionaire contracted E. Jean Carroll to sue Trump for defamation once a leftwing legislator in New York changed the law to drop the statute of limitations on alleged sexual assaults.
Carroll, remember, could not remember the year of the alleged assault, lied about the clothes she wore, likely got her narrative of events from a TV show whose script followed closely her accusations—and won $83 million from a leftwing judge.
