The NFL has confirmed to the Herald that it is "looking into the matter" of deflated footballs during last night's AFC Championship Game between the Patriots and Colts.
The allegations against the Patriots were first reported last night by WTHR-TV in Indianapolis, and NFL spokesman Michael Signora confirmed it this morning. If the Patriots are found guilty of any wrongdoing, they could apparently forfeit draft picks, according to the original report, but the outcome of their 45-7 trouncing of the Colts is not in jeopardy.
The penalty might not even be that steep, though. According to the NFL rulebook, if a team is found guilty of tampering with footballs, "The head coach or other club personnel will be subject to discipline, including but not limited to, a fine of $25,000." That's a slap on the wrist.
It's unclear when or how a team could deflate footballs during a game. Officials test the footballs two hours prior to kickoff, and they can routinely measure the pressure during the game.
However, Pro Football Talk reported this morning that several balls were removed from play due to the low pressure. PFT's source also said it's "not unheard of" for something like this to happen, though.
Tom Brady, who appeared on WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Show this morning, called the whole thing "ridiculous."
He also added, "I think I've heard it all at this point. That's the last of my worries. I don't even respond to stuff like this."
Bill Belichick is scheduled to conduct a conference call with the media at 3 p.m., so he'll have his first chance to address the matter at that point.
Don't be surprised if the NFL resolves the alleged issue today. The last thing the league needs is some type of controversy, whether it's real or drummed up, to drown out two weeks of hype before a potentially classic Super Bowl XLIX showdown between the Patriots and defending champion Seahawks.
