Florida is swamped by disease outbreaks as quackery replaces science

An entirely preventable outbreak of measles spreading across Florida, medical experts are questioning if quackery has become official health policy in the nation’s third most-populous state.

As the highly contagious disease raged in a Broward county elementary school, Ladapo, a politically appointed acolyte of Florida’s far-right governor Ron DeSantis, wrote to parents telling them it was perfectly fine for parents to continue to send in their unv******ted children.

“The surgeon general is Ron DeSantis’s lapdog, and says wh**ever DeSantis wants him to say,” said Dr Robert Speth, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at south Florida’s Nova Southeastern University with more than four decades of research experience.

“His statements are more political than medical and that’s a horrible disservice to the citizens of Florida. He’s somebody whose job is to protect public health, and he’s doing the exact opposite.”

Why hasn’t this clowns license to practice medicine been suspended?

Mostly spin and lies from you as usual lil guy. 97% of those children are v******ted. Why aren’t you whining about all the unv******ted people coming through the Southern border? Because it’s your side allowing it.

Why hasn’t this clowns license to practice medicine been suspended?
Because quack medicine is acceptable if it is a firmly held belief.

Also parental rights. Just like during the dark ages parents have a right to inflict pain and suffering on their children.

And the other children that their children spread it to with DeSantis’ blessing. Politics trumps common sense.

Spring break trips to Florida will help to spread it far and wide.

Gee that's funny, I live in Broward County Florida and I don't know a single person experiencing a serious illness and I know a lot of people. The only major illness I'm aware of in Broward County is that it's heavily democratic and if the source of your story is a college professor I'll consider it bogus.

It's the height of tourist season in Orlando, and Broward County is the top destination.
Likely brought here by tourists from these states:
As of February 29, 2024, a total of 41 measles cases were reported by 16 jurisdictions: Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

V******tion. Measles can be prevented with a measles-containing v*****e, which is primarily administered as the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) v*****e.

On Jan. 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health alert to warn the public about growing cases of measles.

The agency confirmed 23 cases from Dec. 1, 2023, to Jan. 23, 2024, including seven cases of international travelers and two outbreaks of more than five cases each, mostly in children and adolescents who had not been v******ted.

“Worldwide, we are in the midst of a large measles outbreak,” Yancey notes.

There are currently large outbreaks in many Asian, Middle Eastern, African and European countries, a CDC spokesperson tells TODAY.com.

The World Health Organization recently warned of an "alarming" 45-fold increase in measles cases in Europe in 2023 compared to 2022, BBC reported.

“In Europe and western Asia, measles numbers went from under 1,000 in 2022 to 30,000 in 2023, and these numbers appear to be increasing in 2024,” Yancey adds.

Last month, health officials in the United Kingdom warned of measles spreading rapidly after confirming more than 200 cases in the West Midlands, according to a press release.

Where is measles in the US?
So far, the following U.S. states have recently reported cases of measles:

California — two cases, the first case in Los Angeles County since 2020
Georgia — two siblings in metro Atlanta family, first case since 2020
Missouri — one case in Clay County
Maryland — one case in Montgomery County after international travel
New Jersey — one case in Camden County, first case since March 2023
Ohio — one case in Montgomery County
Pennsylvania — nine cases, eight in Philadelphia and one outside the city
Washington — six cases in Clark and Wahkiakum counties
Arizona — one case in Maricopa County
Minnesota — two cases in the Twin Cities metro area
Florida
New York City
Virginia
