Patriot And ISIS Death For A Cause

I think it was a mistake when conservative Ben Carson recently stated that both US Patriots and ISIS share a common belief of willing to die for their cause that was received with applause at the RNC winter meeting in San Diego.

Is death for a cause something to always be glorified and applauded? Granted, death in the line of duty as a heroic selfless act to defend aggression for those unable to protect themselves is admirable and courageous. But failing to see the difference between that and ISIS is a mistake.

There are many ways that society is changed. Declaring independence from a monarchy may be a death sentence but it isn't the same as declaring war and seeking world domination through force. The Patriots declared independence and knew they would likely need to defend their belief of religious and economic freedom from the monarchy in order to survive. However, ISIS is not defending itself from aggression like the Patriots. Rather, they are forcing their belief. They are seeking to o*******w the power of citizens to determine governance and replace it with religious governance.

We've seen this behavior in the past. Amin Da Da, Khmer Rouge, Stalin, N**i's, etc., held a belief that to change society, force and threat of death was worth dying for. The masses were given a choice to either support the cause or die as an enemy against the cause. This is not defending a belief but rather, forcing a belief. How can the two be ethically connected?

Hussites defended their belief in Bohemia for decades when faced with death from the Holy Roman Empire to comply with the religious state of governance and belief. They didn't seek to o*******w the empire. So too, the Patriots declared independence and died in defense of that belief but never did they seek to o*******w and invade the British Empire. Others, incapable of defending themselves, such as the Huguenots, Pilgrims and Quakers left their countries for America where they could live without being persecuted. They all were Patriots fighting to avoid being indoctrinated into the Anglican belief system.

Carson's analogy is like saying both the execution of a murderer and the death of the victim share a common cause of death.

Failure to miss that difference is a mistake; a failure to recognize the whole freedom versus s***ery dichotomy.

Every single Soldier that has fought, is fighting or will fight has fought for the right of Freedom..I don't think there is any misunderstanding of that at all..Mr. Carsons' analogy open to interpretation but his message was clear..Two very distinct reasons what the cause is and how it must be resisted..

Of course I was one of those cheering him on when I saw it~~~So I might be a little prejudiced..Great post ...I do understand what your saying and it is important to keep distinction....

I see Dr. Carson's statement and I understand what he is doing and that is simply stating that if you believe in your viewpoint you will be willing to die for it.

The main difference between the patriot and the ISIS person are many fold. To start it is the fight for freedom and liberty that drives the patriot on in his or her fight to win. The ISIS person not only is brainwashed from youth but is also looking for a reward in the here after of either sixty or seventy virgins to play with. This makes there motives completely opposite of each others but the end results are the same.
