I do some songwriting and wish I could come up with melodies with emotions like this. The recording covered up many of the flaws in Ringo's voice but far from all of them. Still, he does nicely & sweetly. With the orchestra and chorus, I think it is one of The Beatles' best. The lyrics and melodies enhance each other beautifully.
John wrote it but, as usual, credited it to Lennon-McCartney. Lennon was hesitant about it and expressed that the tenderness might conflict with his image. But Paul said he loved John most when he was being tender.
By 1968, The Beatles were established as among the greatest pop songwriters of the twentieth century. I had long since gotten over my initial hesitation about them. I still think I Want To Hold Your Hand & She Loves You are bubble gum fluff with much of their other stuff good and showing much promise. I don't think many people can deny that this is beautiful.
I brought this album (The White Album) home and my mother loved this track. Enjoy and sob a bit.
