Trump turns up the Hitler-style rhetoric, but everyone is snoozing

It’s hard to know what to even say anymore about how Trump is turning up the volume on his Hitler-style rhetoric every week. Which is, of course, entirely by design. This is what Trump does: He normalizes his lies and his f*****t rhetoric by sheer repetition. Matthew Sheffield at Doomscroll (I’m a guest on Wednesday’s episode) reminded me that this is exactly how Trump numbed everyone to the Big Lie before he tried to steal the 2020 e******n. For over a year before the e******n, Trump started to say it was stolen, so by the time the actual e******n came around, reporters were too bored and frazzled to run the 15th million version of “Trump is lying about the e******n again.”
The news media, especially in our 24 hour cable news cycle, thrives on novelty and takes. It’s just hard to know what to say about Trump saying immigrants “poison our blood” and that everyone who didn’t v**e for him is “vermin.” You can say it’s f*****t. You can say he sounds like Hitler. You can say he’s prepping his people for violence and genocide. But there’s not much more to say than that. This is not complicated.

And yet, we have to talk about it. We have to talk about it so it doesn’t get normalized. We have to talk about it so that the people who haven’t heard Trump is going full Hitler might actually hear about it some time before the e******n. We can’t hope that a few carefully placed discussions about Trump’s genocidal rhetoric will somehow reach the ears they need to hear. In political communications, you really need a firehose effect. Because otherwise, it will be missed by most people who are barely paying attention.

I’m not sure how to square that circle. I’m an opinion writer, so I’m caught in the trap. In theory, I should write about Trump’s f*****m every day. In practice, the inability to find new and interesting things to say about it prevents me from doing so. The market and audience demands for the news to be new gets in the way.
This is why we can’t depend on the news media to get the word out. It has to be ordinary people telling each other. It has to be paid political advertising. It has to be door-knocking and social media posts. But the news itself is not going to do it.

Actually, lies upset decent people. And people who support a convicted criminal are deluded by lies and, perhaps, a desire to become a successful criminal themselves. Trump has been convicted of crimes in 3 different courts. Supporting his lies and criminality is immoral.

What crimes has Trump been convicted of? He has lost a couple civil lawsuits but no criminal convictions so far. Who is lying and being immoral now? Me thinks it may be someone named Nick.

Trump does have a very good chance of winning 2024. And liberty for all will cease to exist.
The great experiment will have failed

Nice to know you support a man found guilty of multiple crimes and who has publicly stated his political policy if re-elected of destroying democracy. Far worse than lies. He wants to be f*****t dictator of America, and only a fool supports that. And it is his adjudicated crimes, not his lies, that are immoral. Those things you cite as immoral are only a matter of opinion. They are, in fact, legal and supported by millions of Americans. In your mind set, proven criminals are worse than law abiding citizens. Do you know how stupid that sounds? It actually sounds like a criminal attitude.

Trumps own words. No e******n in 2028. He says he will negotiate, a third term.

My thought? The answer is that trump has publicly announced his clear intent to violate every standard of rule of law, effectively destroying democracy. He said so himself. Believe him. He is a convicted criminal and promised to continue his unconstitutional, frequently illegal behavior. Any person not believing he will do what he said he would do to destroy the rule of law in America is a complete fool. Apparently that includes you.
