I About Had A Heart Attack When My Wife Suggested I Buy A Harley Custom

A friend that traded a custom truck and bought a $45k Harley custom he had made called and said he needed me to help him sell a few things he had, including this bike. I asked him what he wanted for it and he said $8k, he thought it had a blown engine even though he had less than 200 miles on it...he has cancer and went through a surgery where he had a large part of his liver removed.

He said he went to start it up after it sat for a bit and it was leaking oil, so he figured he had blown the motor. I figured at $8k even if I spent another $5k on a new motor it was going to be worth about $20k being brand new and all. I have a neighbor friend that buys estates and anything he can make money on so I figured he'd jump on it. As I was telling my wife about it, she was asking how much it would sell for, and the cost of a motor etc, I told her it was an easy $5k plus, and she asked why we didn't buy it ourselves and make the money rather than James...I was so stunned I didn't know what to say, she said Keith, did you hear what I said, and I told her yeah I did but I needed to go sit down and didn't know what to say as I'd damn near had a heart attack.

So, this is in the garage, and Harleys leak oil after they've sat a bit, so chances are it does not need a motor at all

It's got a really nice $5k+ ghost flame paint job done by a guy that did most of the paint for Simms customs

Oh, and I got it for $6500, Lol

I told my friend if it sold quick without needing an engine I'd kick him back a few grand, he needs the money as he has cancer and can't work

If your "friend" paid $45k for that bike he got royally screwed. And he was totally stupid -- like your usual posts -- to sell it to you for $8k.

As usual you have no ability to comprehend what you are reading...

He thought he had blown the motor, you can't buy a bike with a blown high performance motor that could take anywhere from $5k to closer to $10k to have replaced (I do not work on these) and not lose money trying to help a desperate friend out.

He set the price based on a blown motor, I told him that it might be fine, if it was I'd kick him back another few thousand if it didn't need a motor and it sold at a good price...which is why I gave him $6500.

You apparently are ignorant as to how much a full Simms custom costs, wheels are $1500 each with tires, there are a dozen custom machined accessories such as the turn signals, grips, that match the gas caps that cost hundreds each, the seat is custom stitched, the paint is a ghost flame job done by a guy that gets over $5k for his work, everything is custom little parts that cost big bucks, the tank has a custom inset with the tack inside.

He traded a supercharged custom ford show truck, Simms gets big bucks for his custom bikes, customers have to wait as much as a year or more to get the bikes they order and pay for.

Stupid guys find themselves in bad situations where they have to sell their hideously expensive toys to make rent payments and survive. A few years ago I bought a two year old boat that cost the guy $35k for $6000, he needed it to make his house payments or lose his house. My friend got cancer and can't work, he was behind on his rent by a month or two. At least I'm a good enough friend to help him out and kick him back a few thousand more dollars if I can come out okay on this, which is more than greedy people do.

As a last word on my friend, he is profoundly stupid as far as I'm concerned, he has a race level quad that he is trying to get $20k for because he has $40k in race caliber suspension and motor work, he will never get that. He has spent money stupidly that he should have in the bank.

You can bloviate all you want on that bike but bottom line is that your "friend" got ripped off if he paid $45k for that bike brand new. And that paint job ain't worth 5 grand IMHO.

You have to show your ignorance every time you open your mouth don't you?

Look up Simms, Mike Taylor did the paint, it doesn't show in the garage, but it's a pretty serious ghost flame job with layers of burgundy metal flake and striping that pops out in the sun.

The general consensus is that this is obviously a pretty serious custom that does not come cheap, it's got more going on with it than you can tell until you are looking at it in person. Simms customs that are running and in clean shape trade at about $20k+/-. Every part on this bike comes at a steep price, it's a no expense spared build.

IMHO it's way overpriced... but then again what do you expect from California, the land of fruits and nuts.

BTW... why is everybody else but you stupid or ignorant? You might want to reflect on your opinion of yourself.

You need to find someone that knows real bikes, not show bikes to look at it. A biker could likely get it running overnight. That's when a lot of them work on them. And his price would be more reasonable then any shop. And quicker. And no phony "I had to replace two muffler bearings and rotate your brakes" bulls**t that bike shops love to do. Good Luck with it. The market is a little down right now but you should still double your money or better. Twenty K on the up side if you want to sell it quick to help your friend. In my humble optimistic opinion.

No bike paint job is worth 5 grand in my opinion but that's what some fools pay. Maybe if H****r B***n painted it?
Naw

If someone paid 5k for that paint they should ask for a refund! I have done custom motorcycle paint for 20 years and that is an ultra simple pinstripe flame job! Ghost flames should only be visible in bright light viewed at close distances hence the term ghost. I agree that candy colors and metal flake as well as a quality clear are very expensive nowadays, but if he payed 5k he bought a name. That paint job should not be more than 1500 to 2k max.

Really? I seem to be the one deciding the toys I get...$45k boat last year in July, backhoe earlier the same year, Range Rover this July to pull the boat to replace the F-150 Platinum I had and sold, steel building being put in now to park the backhoe and boat in...I have contributed heavily to what we have, and we make joint decisions.

Jeanne would laugh at that comment

I am fine with you on this. Your friend is obviously in need. You helped him out. He was not in a position to spend the time to get as much money for his possessions as possible. Also what is something worth ? It is only worth what someone will pay you right now. You say it is potentially worth a lot more than you can give him. Maybe not. You are willing to take the risk, but it is still a risk.

Right now with interest rates so high, he probably could not get the figures you believe it is worth. Back in 2008-09 I had a secure job, but many people around me were losing their jobs, their homes, and their super expensive toys. I saw guys desperately trying to sell their bass boats cheap, really cheap because they needed cash, right now. Hardly used fully equipped boats that these guys had two years before paid maybe $ 15,000 and more, I could have scooped up for $ 4 grand and probably less.

I did not want a bass boat and did not buy one. Point being, without you your friend would have done far worse.
