I disagree. Civilization is nothing more than a bunch of small groups living together and tolerating one another just enough to keep the larger group from disintegrating into chaos. Within that civilization there can be open warfare as long as that warfare does not destroy the structure of the group.

Using a healed fractured leg bone as proof of civilization is thin unless you wish to define a grouping down to the number two as a civilization. A partnership of two people, husband and wife, or two h****r gatherers would be able to allow a fractured leg to heal.

Even in the animal kingdom any animal within a herd has a shot at gaining time for a major injury to heal. I am not sure whether a broken leg on a wildebeest or a zebra would heal under the best of circumstances, but if it would that animal has a chance by hiding within the herd. Now that I think of it, I have seen 3 legged deer, so yes.

Among predators, a leopard with any injury will starve quickly because it is solitary. A lion within a p***e can rely on the p***e to protect and feed it while it tries to recover, but nobody will call a p***e of lions a civilization.

I still disagree strongly. You equate civilization with morality and kindness. They are simply not the same thing. Again small h****r gatherer groups will have morality and kindness for two reasons. First they have family ties. Secondly the stronger the social ties, the better the odds are for the survival of the group.

No the word civilization does not have greater meaning than tolerating one another. Human beings in general are pretty nasty critters. Hating each other is their natural state of being. They sure as hell will never love others as themselves. You can love those in your own family and in your small circle of friends.

The best you can do with those outside of your little tribe is to tolerate them. If you want to, you can enlarge your tribe to include more. If you want to, your tribe can include all of your countrymen for the sake of joining your country's army to defend it against foreign tribes, but as soon as the war is over your tribe shrinks back down.

I think that instead of talking about civilization, you need to use the word civil. We can try to be civil towards one another. That means if someone collapses in front of you on the street, you try to help them. In some major " civilizations " today if a person collapses thousands of folks will walk on by and not help.

This is because in those " civilizations " if you touch that person who has collapsed, they can and will sue you. In those " civilizations " you see people falling over from a gentle touch. If you are smart when this happens to you, you will also fall over so that you can counter sue.

It is all very true and very civilized.
