Read some of John Lott's works, the laws that allow the legal carry of firearms DO result in lower crime rates generally, not just ones that are gun-related.
Still there will be some Trayvon Martins that commit crimes in spite of the increased risk of getting shot by their potential victims, so it's also a matter of vigilance.

Apparently it is ok for an armed thug to threaten an innocent bystander with a loaded gun during a robbery but it isn't permissible for a citizen to stop the robbery by shooting the robber when he himself has the robber's

This THUGS mother is a moronic,i***t. If I had shot this dick head,his momma would be saying that he was on his way to the church where he was a preacher,and just happened to stop in the Dollar General store,To buy some Rosary Beads,when he FOUND that pistol on the ground,and was just trying to give it to the clerk,Who was on his Knees,just picking up some trash that was on the floor,When I pulled my CCW,and shot her son full of so many holes,this THUG died on the spot.
