Buying eyeglasses in New York State

I just tried to buy eyeglasses here in NY. I need the strength to be 3.00. I chose the ones I wanted and when I went to check out, Amazon said they won't ship to my address. After a half hour of frustrating attempts to buy 3.00 glasses from ANY company on Amazon, it said I couldn't buy glasses that were stronger than 2.75 in New York and that's why they won't ship them to me.

Does anyone know why people in New York can't have reading eyeglasses that are stronger than 2.75 shipped to addresses in only New York??

I found the answer: There is a law in NY (and Minnesota, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Alaska - for now) that no one in those states can buy eyeglasses that are stronger than 2.75 without a prescription from a doctor! Some politician somewhere decided that if they limit purchase of reading glasses that is more than 2.75, they could make a whole lot more money by making people who need stronger reading glasses buy them via prescription only. I called the eye doctor that I've been seeing and he said he can give me a prescription for that strength, but he could not promise what the price would be for the frames and lenses, but he gave me the prescription for nothing just to see what happened when I tried to order a pair of 3.00 glasses.

The cheapest price I could find for just plain reading glasses at 3.00 strength from my eye doctor was $126. I used to be able to buy 3 pairs of 3.25 glasses for about $20.00. Now it's going to cost over $120 for ONE pair! When I called Amazon to ask why they wouldn't ship to my address, they told me that if they did they would be fined a large "fee"...

This is a form of censoring! And I bet more states will follow as others realize they are losing out on this "opportunity" to make more money.

I wonder what's going to be next where we can't buy something online that we always have but can't anymore because it's been censored?? Prescription drugs comes to my mind....

Didn't think of that....but it makes sense!

This is the first time I've seen censoring of eyeglasses! I was stunned when I learned this! And, of course, it led me to think of what else they can censor, if they can do it with glasses!!?? As if times aren't hard enough as it is!! The possibilities are endless!

Once upon a time long long ago people would get off their ass and go to a store to buy things. At the store you could actually touch and try merchandise before paying for it, in this way you actually knew what you were getting. Today people want the 'convenience' of having someone else deciding what you get or don't get and when you'll get it until one day 'they' will decide everything for you. And if you don't already see it coming you'd better wake up.

If you have an out of state friend have it sent to them. I did, I am sure no jury would convict you.

Yes, I have been wondering when it was all going to begin to affect our daily lives.... When gas went up by $3.00 per gallon it was bad. When eggs went up from 79¢ to $3.99 it was bad. When the same pair of shoes went from $69.00 to $129 it was bad. But reading glasses going from ~$5.00/pair to over $130/pair - AND not being able to buy them online or anywhere else in the state but from an eye doctor with a prescription - is downright scary! Really....they're trying to control our eyesight now???

Yes...it's coming, alright - and quickly!! This administration is going to take away as much as they can from us Middle Class people by the e******n.

I wonder if Trump is sitting there watching each disaster Biden causes and wondering if he really wants to be the one to have to clean up the huge mess this country has become! San Francisco, LA, NYC, the border states, Chicago, Detroit....all disasters!

And we have a year to go!!
