“The Policeman”

A policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.

What that really means is that they are exceptional, they are unusual, they are not commonplace. Buried under the froth is the fact: and the fact is, less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. And that is a better average than you would find among clergymen!

What is a policeman? He, of all men, is at once the most needed and the most wanted. A strangely nameless creature who is “sir” to his face and “pig” or worse to his back.

He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.

But…If the policeman is neat, he is conceited; If he’s careless, he’s a bum. If he’s pleasant, he’s a flirt; If he’s not, he’s a grouch.

He must make instant decisions which would require months for a lawyer.

But…if he hurries, he’s careless; If he’s deliberate, he’s lazy. He must be first to an accident, infallible with a diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp.

The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn’t hurt. He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being “brutal.” If you hit him…he’s a coward. If he hits you…he’s a bully.

The policeman, from a single human hair, must be able to describe the crime, the weapon, the criminal and tell you where the criminal is hiding. But…if he catches the criminal, he’s lucky; if he doesn’t, he is a dunce.

He runs files and writes reports until his eyes ache, to build a case against some felon who will get “dealed out” by a shameless shamus.

The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.

And of course, he’ll have to be a genius…for he will have to feed a family on a policeman’s salary.

You can find the original newspaper column, “What Are Policemen Made Of?” from 1970 in Mansfield and Holland’s, “Paul Harvey’s America.”

Paul Harvey's Dad, a Police Officer was k**led in the line of duty when Paul was 3 years old.

Well I'm glad all your meetings with cops have gone soo well for you. I disagree I find at least half the cops I meet to be power hungry a-holes. Far as I am concerned the police are a bunch of very dangerous folks who need to be filmed at all times while on duty and part of the time when they are off duty. I lost a very successful gun store business because a cop was uninterested in the fact that his stupidity had just k**led my best friend and that is Forever. I feel like cops should all just Fuc% Off & Die and I only wish I had the nerve to help that along sooner. Turns out I'm not half the cold blooded k**ler many of these renegade, one time gang member cops are today. Say what you will, You won't change my mind. Then again I learned everything I know about cops directly from the bad apples I have encountered over the years, not from some pack of lies.

My hatred was minimal before my gun store was removed but I've been hassled by cops for many years off and on. I was never charged for the largest amount, simply picked on for no discernable reason I could find. Now I wish to donate to the cause.

Gun store removed? Been hassled for years? I'd love to hear both sides of that story. Judging from your rant here, you may be, at least, a large portion of the problem between you and the authorities.

It appears that you were "against the system" years ago, and continue to be so.

I finished all my punishment & after the years went by I had my rights restored. I followed every law and opened a gun store even after the atf rep urged me not to. One day my best fried suffered a stroke and the cop led the ambulance to the wrong address. In the time it took for him to find the scene, friend died. Never have got used to having a friend die & in my hysterical state I said something that pissed off mr badcop & of course his liar partner. They showed me good & so did my $25k attorney when he screwed me too. I will remain bitter for this forever. I h**e to hear about how great a cops work is, I been meeting dishonest cops since well before this incident. The sad fact is when a bad cop writes a report somewhere there is a once good cop who will lie, in order to cover "his buddy" It's unfortunate, but I suppose it is better than not having help when some perp is trying to shoot your ass off. That still doesn't make it o.k. to lie. It doesn't excuse the fact that lots of new hire cops have gang affiliations and the tattoos to go with them.
Some times it pisses me off & I guess today is one of them.

If you mean our present system where congress passes an insanely huge budget, including a $1,000 car subsidy per member, as if those scum need another raise, then Yes, I am. A system that rewards the biggest thieves and punishes the smallest? What kinda system is that? Should folks then aspire to become among the biggest thieves then?

maybe you should go to Iraq and fight the isis
maybe then your anger would be put to good use
sounds to me as if you have had cop issues since you were in your early years
there is a reason you had those issues
its called being a hooligan who disrespects the law

I sure as hell didn't start out that way, good suggestion but I'm too old and broken to legally fight anything

You give the cops too much credit! In the past and I mean way in the past like the 50s and 60s the cops were human beings back then. Sure they would rough you up a little when you are caught do something wrong. Today the cops are brutal animals and if were not for many of them being videoed there would be many more people abused by there authority. Besides many of them being animals they are dumb asses who should not be given a gun and a badge. As for your statistics of 1% of incidents of police brutality. That is only what is reported. It's probably more like 30% or more. Calling a cop for help is a detriment to our well being. Besides, they take their sweet ass time to respond.

No sir, your putting police as defenders of crime and nice guys is fantasy.
