GOP strategists and pollsters expect former President Trump’s criminal trials to divide their party, creating a challenge for the Senate and House Republican candidates who will have to walk a fine line on the issue.
Trump’s legal troubles and his escalating battle with the Department of Justice will a become litmus test in GOP primaries next year — just as Trump’s claims that the 2020 e******n was s****n helped define candidates as MAGA-aligned in 2022, GOP strategists say.
Candidates running in swing states and districts, especially Republicans trying to appeal to independent and college-educated women, will have to keep their distance from Trump’s legal problems, which could become a major liability for the GOP in the general e******n, they say.
Whit Ayres, a prominent Republican pollster, said Trump “has major problems, particularly with college-educated women.”

Many establishment Republicans do not like Trump. He is not 'one of the boys' like their friends on the Democrat side of the isle.
And I am sure most of the strategists ALSO are in that 'club'. However, in this case, I think they are right that Trump and anyone supporting him will have a very hard time with the independents.

Not necessarily. But it has been my (admittedly personal) experience that people who look at evidence before they draw conclusions, especially conclusions they feel truly strong about, tend to migrate to the right. People who see the world not as it is, but through their own personal lens, people who see and recognize evidence only when it backs up their world view or chosen narrative, those people tend to move to the left.
There are, however, such people on both sides of the spectrum. We see some of them on the right, those who support Trump without seeing his faults, unlike the majority of us who support Trump IN SPITE of his faults, because his positives outweigh his negatives.
Narrative followers tend to be easily led around because they are looking for people to validate their beliefs. That's what the Democrats do. No limits. Do what feels good, right or wrong, just or injust, legal or illegal. We will support it. I think a lot of people find that emotionally appealing. As we can see, too many such people are dangerous.

You said it perfectly, emotionally appealing. Seems many on the left operate off of emotions. We see it in the irrational outbursts many opponents of a******n exibit.. I v**ed for Trump, he is a little rough around the edges, but I did not v**e for a counselor or pastor, I v**ed for someone who could get things done for America and was pretty sure Trump could not be bought off.

We are not frightened of Trump. We just think that he doesn’t have any redeeming qualities. He uses people. He stiffs people, his mouth is the size the Atlantic Ocean, but nothing decent ever comes out of it. Say wh**ever you want about Trump. We sorta just don't care about his phony accomplishments, or his phony wh**ever.
